BPG Chapter 39

This entry is part 40 of 59 in the series Demon King, don't run away [Peasant in the Game World]

[In the long journey of life, as long as you keep pushing upward, you will eventually reach your limit. You stumbled your way into becoming an adventurer, endured numerous hardships, and now you’ve touched the limit of what you can achieve as a human. You are now at a crossroads: breaking through this limit will make you stronger; failing to do so means spending your life at this level, living an ordinary existence.

What will you do to break through your limits?

1. Exercise and meditate daily. Find yourself through physical training and elevate your mind through meditation. Become bald and naturally grow stronger.

2. Life is long, and I’ve learned that humans have limits. System, I don’t want to be human anymore!

3. Giant humanoid robots are the true romance of men. I’m going to build one.

4. A simple, ordinary life is the truest. Become a regular office worker or abandon everything to become a farmer.

Time limit for decision: None]

This damn system wants me to go home and farm again. Sure, there are light novels where farming defeats the demon king, but this is a serious world. Farming won’t stop the demon king’s army; they’d just crush me.

After the party, Yang Yu lay on his bed, facing one of the most crucial decisions of his life. The system’s prompt had him so preoccupied that he kept a straight face throughout the celebration.

First option, daily exercise and meditation, seemed too time-consuming—an easy no.

Fourth option, farming or becoming an office worker, would turn him into a background character in the game. If he could awaken a power to turn things into bombs just by touching them, maybe he could fight, but who knows if that would really happen?

So, it came down to options two and three.

Option two clearly involved transforming into another race.

Option three meant creating devices and wreaking havoc, with the ultimate goal of becoming a super mechanic piloting a giant robot, essentially a one-man army.

It sounded great at first. But where would he get the blueprints? While this world had some technology, most of it was for research, with little for civilian use. Travel was still by horse-drawn carriage.

Don’t tell me the blueprints rely on luck. I know how my luck is—I can count on not getting them.

After much thought, Yang Yu decided to use his four lottery draws first. If he got the blueprints, he’d choose option three; if not, he’d choose option two.

[Congratulations! You’ve received an apple (junk).]

[Congratulations! You’ve received a physics textbook (junk).]

[Congratulations! You’ve received a pineapple (junk).]

[Congratulations! You’ve received an empty glass bottle (junk).]

Yep.

Option two it is. Not being human seems like the most viable choice.

Becoming a mechanic meant too many scattered goals: finding blueprints, gathering materials, and long manufacturing times.

Even if he gained a skill for quick manufacturing, the probability was too low. It took him a year of farming to get a skill for cultivating four-leaf clovers. He couldn’t imagine how long it would take to master the numerous skills needed for a mechanic.

It’d be a grind, or maybe he could pay to win by hiring adventurers to do his bidding if he had enough money.

Neither path seemed easy, so for a commoner, only one choice remained.

I’m not mistaken. This is reality; accept it.

Without hesitation, Yang Yu chose option two. Humans have limits. To achieve greatness, he’d have to stop being human.

[Are you sure about choosing option two?]

Yes.

[System update: New feature added—Fusion]

This time, no tasks appeared, but the system added a new feature.

Yang Yu immediately felt a surge of energy, eager to explore the new feature.

In simple terms, this new feature involved collecting essence from other races to become a hybrid, thereby raising his level cap.

The process seemed to involve tossing the collected essence into a mini-game, simulating a candy-making machine, to produce candies that increase the level cap.

But here was the problem: what is racial essence? How do you collect it? And how much is needed?

Yang Yu was clueless. The new feature’s explanation was minimal, with no tutorials or demonstrations.

“I’ll have to ask Andeno tomorrow.”

Just as Yang Yu was about to turn off the light and sleep, there was a knock on the door. It was Bai Jin, holding Hemeng.

“I have something for you.”

“Oh. Our rooms aren’t far; couldn’t it just crawl over on its own?”

Don’t talk about me like I’m an object, Hemeng thought, leaping and hitting Yang Yu with a Slime Bash.

Yang Yu tried to catch Hemeng but failed, landing hard on the floor.

Ouch, that hurt!

Opening his attribute panel, Yang Yu’s eyes widened in shock.

[Hemeng

Species: Slime (Royal) Level: LV23 HP: 578/578 MP: 220/220

Attributes: Strength 124, Defense 289, Intelligence 156, Special Defense 268, Agility 79, Endurance 86

Resistance: Physical 50%

Status: Blood Pact (Irreversible unless one party dies) Free Attribute Points: 80]

Did this little guy eat something special? How did it level up so much and gain such high attributes? This is insane!

Comparing Hemeng’s attributes to his own, Yang Yu felt like crying.

No worries, no worries. It’s normal for a commoner to have these stats. After all, this is the most challenging start.

“What did you eat to level up so quickly?”

If Hemeng told Yang Yu it was because of killing the Goblin King, Yang Yu would want to bash his head against a pole.

“A strange goblin. Hehe, I was going to use the body for potions, but Hemeng ate it all. Such a waste.”

Bai Jin’s eerie laugh sounded more like she was trying to forget something unpleasant.

She then pulled a red gemstone from her bag and handed it to Yang Yu. “The task you gave me is complete. Here’s the loot. I couldn’t find a chance to give it to you at the tavern.”

Bai Jin had leveled up five times, but her attributes hadn’t changed much. Her experience gain likely came from the actual defeat of the Goblin King.

This meant Hemeng’s strength came from its racial trait of absorbing what it dissolved, a common feature for slimes.

Realizing this, Yang Yu felt relieved. He took the gemstone, and the system chimed, triggering a new task.
