Chapter 22: Oh No, Is He Going to Die?

The serfs’ liberation was complete, and next came the grand and vigorous construction plans. Compared to the initial gloom, excitement and anticipation for the future now filled everyone’s faces.

At this moment, they had regained hope. Even though most of them were still slaves, the ones who had been freed clearly showed them that with enough effort, they could also break free from their status as slaves and become free citizens of Eagle Ridge.

This temptation was undoubtedly greater than anything else.

Under these circumstances, Thor’s policies were swiftly implemented one by one.

Thor’s construction plans were unlike those of most lords of this era. Instead, he relied on his memories from his previous life, carefully planning and organizing everything.

Compared to other disorganized territories, Eagle Ridge was extremely well-structured.

He also established numerous latrines and ordered everyone to use them for their sanitary needs. This simple measure dramatically improved the cleanliness of the entire territory.

Of course, Thor’s motives weren’t just about cleanliness. More importantly, the collection of human and animal waste provided the best organic fertilizer.

As a time traveler, Thor understood this well.

In fact, in his previous life, he had worked alongside his grandparents, fertilizing the fields in the countryside.

Now, with this advantage, he certainly wouldn’t pass it up.

Though many people didn’t fully understand his methods, as the lord, his authority was absolute. No one questioned his decisions, not even the newly freed citizens.

As for the members of the knight corps, it was even less likely that they would object.

Under this plan, the territory’s construction progressed rapidly.

Farmlands were being cleared, and new houses were quickly springing up around the territory.

Even Thor’s castle had seen significant progress.

By the end of the first month, the outer sections had already been completed.

Only the interior remained unfinished, but it was expected to be done within three months.

Once the castle was completed, Eagle Ridge would finally be a fully developed territory.

After all, the completion of a castle was the key indicator of a territory’s development.

It often took three to five years for a pioneering knight to reach this stage, and some pioneers might even take up to ten years to achieve it.

Building a castle wasn’t something that could be done overnight. Relying solely on slave labor without a workforce of thousands made completing a castle almost impossible.

And gathering thousands of people was no easy feat for most pioneering knights.

The cost of 500 slaves alone was 50 gold coins. For thousands of people, that would mean hundreds or even thousands of gold coins. Add in the expenses for materials, and the cost would soar even higher. Only pioneering knights from families of viscount rank or above had the resources to support such an expenditure.

In the Northern Province, pioneering knights from viscount families or higher were few and far between.

Most were wandering knights or knights from baron families, making their construction efforts exceedingly difficult.

But Thor was different. Not only did he have strong support from his father, but he also promised all his knights the opportunity to learn the Fierce Eagle Breathing Technique.

Even without further promises, this was enough to fully mobilize the enthusiasm of the knights.

Having knights involved in the construction made a significant difference compared to ordinary slave labor, and the speed of development increased dramatically.

This was exactly what Thor needed.

His goal was not just to stay focused on building the territory.

He aimed to complete the development task as quickly as possible and become a noble.

Every ten years, the kingdom conducted an evaluation.

There were only three years left until the next evaluation.

Thor’s goal was to complete the development task within these three years and become an official noble of the kingdom.

As night fell, yet another day slipped by.

The next morning, as the sunlight spread across the land, Eagle Ridge once again became bustling with construction.

Thor, while inspecting his territory, was also contemplating the next steps for its development.

However, while he was walking, Raine hurried over.

“My lord!”

Raine appeared anxious.

“What’s the matter?”

Seeing Raine approach, Thor stopped and asked, curious.

“My lord, the old man you brought with you… he seems to be getting worse!”

Raine quickly explained.

“Worse?”

Thor was momentarily stunned, and his expression changed.

“Let’s go, take me to see him!”

Thor immediately ordered, stepping quickly toward the old man’s room.

This was no joke—he had already invested a divine fruit to save the old man. Just a few days ago, the man’s condition had worsened again, and Thor had to use a bottle of intermediate life potion. If the old man died now, all his investments would be wasted.

The two moved swiftly and soon arrived at the old man’s room.

But as soon as Thor saw the old man, his expression darkened.

The brownish hue that had previously receded from the old man’s face had once again begun to spread.

“Raine, quickly, get another bottle of life potion!”

“No, bring both bottles!”

Thor hesitated briefly but ultimately made up his mind.

“Yes!”

Raine, though shocked, swiftly complied and rushed off.

Moments later, he returned with a wooden box.

“Administer both bottles of life potion to him!”

Thor felt a pang of heartache. These were his last two bottles of intermediate life potion, but now wasn’t the time to be stingy.

“Yes!”

Raine hurriedly nodded, opening the wooden box and taking out the two bottles of life potion.

He carefully approached the old man’s bedside and administered the potions.

After taking the first bottle, the poisonous toxins in the old man’s face were visibly halted from spreading further.

“My lord?”

Raine instinctively looked toward Thor.

“Give him the last one too!”

Thor sighed. At this point, all he could hope for was that the old man would survive; otherwise, his losses would be too great.

Seeing Thor nod again, Raine didn’t hesitate any longer.

He administered the second bottle of life potion to the old man.

After both bottles were administered, the effects became evident. The poison not only stabilized but even began to recede.

The old man’s body started to emit a faint wave of life force once again.

“Phew!”

Seeing this, Thor finally breathed a sigh of relief.

He had originally kept the three bottles of life potion for himself—one to break through to knight status, and the other two to train his subordinates.

Now, they were all gone.

If the old man hadn’t survived, Thor’s losses would have been tremendous.

“Take good care of him!”

“If anything happens, notify me immediately!”

Thor ordered before rising to leave.

“Yes!”

Raine quickly nodded.

(Author Note: Earlier, the three bottles of intermediate life potion were not distributed but kept.)
