Chapter 29: Buying Serfs and Returning to the Territory
Inside the room, Racios dismissed Lamm, and the two of them continued their conversation for quite some time. It wasn’t until an hour later that Thor finally emerged from the meeting with Racios, a satisfied smile on his face.
Not only had Thor successfully purchased a large quantity of wildfire oil, but more importantly, he had struck a partnership with Racios. As a member of the Assad family, which specialized in trade, Racios, despite his lack of favor within the family, still had access to considerable resources.
This new avenue of cooperation would make it much easier for Thor to acquire materials in the future.
As for the issue of smuggling, the kingdom’s laws only punished smugglers, not buyers.
After all, this was a world governed by a noble autocracy, and the nobles—who made the laws—would never write laws that restricted their own actions.
Smuggling was no different.
In most cases, only nobles could afford to buy smuggled goods anyway, leaving common folk out of the equation.
As for why Racios agreed to the deal, the answer was simple: Thor had painted a big enough picture for him to believe in.
If Thor became a baron within three years, Racios, as the one who helped establish the trade route, stood to gain unimaginable rewards.
Even if Racios didn’t consider the long-term benefits, the chance to improve his current situation was enough for him to agree. His earlier hesitation was only due to the fact that Thor was from the Dresrosa family, while he was from the Assad family.
But that hesitation was insignificant in the face of such a tempting offer.
“Raine , take some gold and thirty knights, and head to Maple Leaf Ridge later to bring back the goods,” Thor instructed Raine as they walked.
“Yes, my lord!” Raine responded quickly.
After giving Raine his instructions, Thor made his way to the Habs Trading Company. He hadn’t forgotten the original purpose of his visit. The wildfire oil had been an unexpected bonus, but to ensure success, he still needed to buy some slaves.
Thor strode into the trading company.
As soon as one of the attendants spotted him from a distance, the man’s face lit up with excitement, and he quickly hurried over.
“Welcome, Sir Thor Dresrosa,” the attendant said, slightly out of breath but eager. He couldn’t hide his excitement—Thor had spent a hefty sum of 120 gold coins during his last visit, and such a valuable customer was not one to forget, even after the attendant’s recent promotion.
“Ah, what a coincidence,” Thor said with a smile. “I’ve come to purchase more serfs this time. How many do you have available?”
“We certainly have slaves in stock, Sir Thor,” the attendant replied with a smile as he led Thor inside. “How many would you like to purchase this time?”
Thor followed the attendant as they made their way back to the basement.
Once the crystal lights illuminated the room, rows of slaves became visible again.
“This time, I need stronger slaves,” Thor said with a sigh. “By the Goddess of Life, the last batch you sold me was far too weak. They couldn’t even handle a small group of green goblins. Out of five hundred, almost all of them are dead.”
The attendant’s face twitched slightly at Thor’s words, and he cursed internally. *What a bloodsucker,* he thought.
“Well, Sir Thor, those slaves were already quite strong. But as you are a valued customer, the Habs Trading Company will meet your needs. A new batch of slaves just arrived. They’re more robust and require only a bit of buckwheat to survive. While they may not be able to fight green goblins, they’ll have no problem dealing with timid goblins. However, the price…”
The attendant trailed off, waving his hand to signal another worker, who quickly ran off.
Moments later, a group of fresh slaves was brought in.
These slaves were noticeably stronger than the last batch, not emaciated and frail.
“Not bad,” Thor nodded approvingly. “What’s the price?”
“Thirty silver coins per slave, but if you buy more, we can offer a discount,” the attendant said cautiously.
“How much of a discount? You don’t understand—my territory has been overrun by those damned green goblins. There are too many of them, and I need a large number of slaves to clear them out,” Thor said with a sigh, feigning frustration.
The attendant’s eyes lit up.
“If you purchase five hundred, how about twenty-eight silver coins per slave?”
The attendant thought for a moment before offering.
“No, no, I don’t think you understood me,” Thor replied, shaking his head. “This is a large goblin tribe I’m dealing with. I don’t need five hundred slaves. I need three thousand.”
The attendant’s eyes widened, his breathing growing heavy.
“You… you need how many?”
“Twenty silver coins per slave, and I’ll take all three thousand. No further discounts required,” Thor said, pretending to hesitate before making the offer.
“Please wait a moment! I need to report this,” the attendant stammered before rushing off.
Three thousand slaves at twenty silver coins each—that amounted to six hundred gold coins. Even for the Habs Trading Company, this was no small transaction.
The attendant quickly reported the matter to his superior, who immediately rushed out to meet Thor.
“Honorable Sir Thor Dresrosa, the Habs Trading Company agrees to your request,” the manager said respectfully. “And since you’re a valued customer, we’ll still offer you the discount.”
“For three thousand high-grade slaves, the total will be 540 gold coins.”
“Thank you very much!” Thor said with a smile, not rejecting the generous discount.
After all, saving money was always a good thing. The price of these slaves had already been marked up tenfold.
“You’re very welcome, Sir Thor. Is there anything else you need?” the manager asked attentively.
“Not at the moment. I’ll be back if I need anything else,” Thor replied with a smile.
“Oh, by the way,” the manager added, as if remembering something. “In three months, there will be an auction here in Lorren City, featuring some rare life potions. If you have time, we’d love for you to attend.”
“Auction?”
“In three months?”
“Thank you for letting me know. If I’m available, I’ll be sure to attend,” Thor said, nodding in appreciation.
He didn’t dismiss the idea. With his daily intelligence system, auctions like this could provide opportunities to acquire valuable items.
