Chapter 49: The Boy with Affinity for All Creatures
After a moment of contemplation, Thor set aside his darker thoughts and turned his attention back to Raine.
“Have the slaves arrived?”
His voice carried a note of anticipation. Compared to dealing with an arrogant fool, he was far more interested in meeting the boy with the “affinity for all creatures” talent.
“They’ve arrived, and we’ve also located the boy named Allen. Would you like to meet him?” Raine replied respectfully.
“Bring him in,” Thor agreed after a brief pause.
Soon, a frail-looking boy of about fifteen or sixteen was brought into the room.
“Master!”
Allen, visibly nervous, immediately knelt down upon seeing Thor, the nobleman in the room.
“Stand up,” Thor said gently, his gaze settling on the boy.
“Allen, would you like to become a freeman, and perhaps even a knight?” Thor’s voice was soft, but his words made Allen freeze in shock. His eyes widened in disbelief, and he looked up at Thor.
“You… you’re serious? Master, could I really become a freeman? A knight?” Allen asked, his voice trembling with a mix of hope and disbelief.
“Of course,” Thor smiled and nodded. “But it will require effort on your part.”
“Master, what do I need to do?” Allen asked directly, his body trembling slightly as he remained prostrated on the floor.
“Work for me,” Thor explained seriously. “I have a herd of unicorns that need tending. If you can manage them well, I will release both you and your parents from your contracts and make you a freeman. And if you do an exceptional job, like helping the unicorns evolve, I might even teach you the knight’s breathing technique and have a full knight train you.”
Thor’s gaze was intent as he spoke, watching the boy’s reaction carefully.
He had already learned everything about Allen after acquiring the slaves. Not only was Allen among them, but so were his parents. However, no one had realized that Allen possessed the rare talent of “affinity for all creatures.”
“Master…” Allen trembled, his eyes wide with shock as he stared at Thor. The nobleman’s words were simple, but Allen knew that his master had somehow discovered his secret—a secret not even his parents knew.
He had the ability to help creatures evolve.
Allen was overwhelmed, unable to comprehend how Thor had figured this out or what the nobleman planned to do with this knowledge. His anxiety only grew.
“Don’t worry,” Thor said, seeing Allen’s unease. He smiled lightly and continued, “In this vast world, there are always those blessed by the Goddess of Life. You’re not that unique. Just do your job well, and I’ll keep my promises.”
Hearing Thor’s reassurance, Allen’s tension eased slightly, though he was still nervous. He quickly bowed again, this time with greater respect.
“Serving you is my honor, my master!” Allen declared, his voice filled with sincerity.
“Good. Stand up. Do your work well, and with me, you will soar to great heights,” Thor said, smiling with approval.
“Yes, my master!” Allen stood, and the nervousness and fear that had gripped him began to melt away, replaced by a glimmer of hope and anticipation.
The secret he had long kept hidden was now out, and rather than bringing disaster, it seemed to bring opportunity. The weight on his heart lifted.
For Thor, having Allen wholeheartedly committed to him was exactly what he needed. If Allen were to continue hiding his abilities, it would have hindered the development of his territory. Now, things were looking far more promising.
Thor could immediately start planning to capture and breed the unicorns.
The leader of the unicorns had the potential to evolve into a Tier 3 magical beast, which was comparable in strength to a human earth knight. Although the chances of this evolution were slim, with Allen’s unique talent, those odds increased significantly.
If the unicorn leader evolved into a Tier 3 magical beast, Thor’s personal strength and the power of his territory would both see substantial growth, securing his place in the Northern Province.
As for the promises he made to Allen, Thor was not bluffing.
At Eagle Ridge, a merit-based system was gradually taking shape. If Allen earned enough merit, granting him freedom would not be difficult.
With Allen now loyal to him, Thor turned his attention to preparing for the return journey.
There were still supplies to buy, especially since it was some time before the wheat would be ready for harvest. A large quantity of food was necessary, as were other materials, including components for the magical crystal cannon.
Fortunately, Loren City had most of what he needed.
It took about two days to complete the purchases.
On the third day, Thor and his party left Loren City.
As the days passed, the bustling activity of the city began to quiet down. The knights, lords, and nobles who had gathered for the auction slowly departed, and the once-crowded streets became less lively.
Thor’s group departed in a grand procession.
The return journey was slower than the trip to Loren City had been.
After about nine days, they finally arrived back at Eagle Ridge.
Despite the time that had passed, not much had changed in Eagle Ridge. Everything continued to run smoothly.
Once the 500 slaves were settled, Thor began attending to the various tasks that had accumulated during his absence. He also arranged for the Thunderstone to be transported to the iron mine.
With the main material for the magical crystal cannon in hand, it was time to begin its construction.
Both Eagle Ridge and the iron mine would need to be equipped with cannons to ensure their protection.
In case of attacks from orcs, magical beasts, or other pioneering lords, these cannons would significantly boost their defenses.
With these matters handled, Thor’s attention shifted back to the unicorn herd.
The information about the unicorns had been consistent, but he had refrained from capturing them earlier because he lacked the means to care for them.
Magical beasts weren’t like ordinary animals; they were difficult to manage, and without the proper resources or personnel, any attempt to raise them would likely result in heavy losses.
But now that Allen was here, those concerns no longer applied.
As for Colin Emerson, Thor wasn’t in a rush to deal with him. Time was on his side. Once his strength had grown further, there would be no reason for that fool to remain.
After all, the Northern Province was a chaotic place, with orc invasions being a common occurrence. The destruction of a territory would hardly draw any attention.
What belonged to Thor Dresrosa wasn’t something that could be taken so easily.
