Chapter 7: Taking in a Guardian Knight
Back at the castle.
Thor handed Raine over to the servants, and soon, Raine received the necessary treatment.
An hour later, Raine slowly woke from his slumber.
The comfort of the large bed made him feel strangely out of place. A delicious aroma filled the air, causing his throat to involuntarily tighten and his stomach to growl.
*Gulp!*
His Adam’s apple bobbed instinctively.
But when his eyes adjusted and he took in his surroundings, Raine jumped in shock, quickly scrambling out of bed, his expression panicked.
He was in an incredibly luxurious room.
Everything he saw seemed beyond his imagination—every item so valuable that selling him wouldn’t cover the cost.
What frightened him even more was that he was now wearing fine, luxurious clothing—the kind he had only ever seen nobles wearing from a distance. He had heard that each piece of such attire cost silver coins, an amount he couldn’t even dream of. Raine had grown up around iron coins, and he had only glimpsed a copper coin three years ago, let alone a silver coin.
As he panicked, the door creaked open.
A servant entered the room.
“Umm… uh…”
Raine stammered, unsure what to say, his nervousness evident.
“No need to worry,”
the servant said warmly, bowing respectfully.
“Master Thor instructed that you eat first before meeting with him.”
Hearing the servant’s respectful tone, Raine felt as if he were still in a dream.
It wasn’t until the servant gestured to the nearby table that Raine noticed it was filled with food.
Not the hard, barely edible black bread he was used to, but exquisitely prepared dishes, including several meats.
*Gulp!*
His throat tightened again. The temptation to approach was overwhelming, but he hesitated.
“Can… can I eat this?”
Raine asked cautiously, still unsure if it was really for him.
“Of course. Master Thor had it prepared for you. Please eat quickly before it gets cold—it won’t taste as good then,”
the servant responded with a kind smile.
Seeing the servant’s reassuring expression, Raine couldn’t resist any longer.
He quickly approached the table and started eating.
As the food entered his mouth, tears welled up in his eyes, though he suppressed them.
He ate quickly, much faster than he would have liked. Normally, with such a feast, he would savor every bite, but remembering the servant’s words, he hastened.
After finishing, Raine followed the servant to meet Thor.
In the training yard, Thor was practicing his knightly skills.
Even though he had formed his Seed of Life and become an apprentice knight, he knew he couldn’t slack off. Continuing to train and gather more life force was crucial to eventually becoming a full knight. Despite having his cheat ability, Thor remained diligent in his practice.
Nearby, Knight Captain Michael observed Thor’s training with some surprise.
Michael knew Thor well, and over the past few years, his progress had been slow and unremarkable. Yet, in the past few days, Thor had advanced rapidly, becoming an apprentice knight, and now he was training with a newfound seriousness.
“It seems Master Thor has truly grown up,”
Michael remarked with a sense of admiration.
As he spoke, Michael noticed the servant approaching with Raine.
He glanced at them but then turned his attention back to Thor.
Thor, too, noticed their approach but didn’t stop his training until he had completed the session.
“Master Thor, your skills have improved greatly. With continued training, you may reach full knighthood within ten years!”
Michael said with a smile.
“Thank you for your guidance, Uncle Michael!”
Thor nodded. He didn’t put too much stock in Michael’s words, as he had a realistic understanding of his own abilities.
After thanking Michael, Thor turned his attention to Raine and the servant.
“Master Thor!”
“Sir!”
They both greeted him.
“Good. It seems you’ve recovered well,”
Thor said with a smile, looking at Raine with satisfaction.
Raine, now dressed in noble attire, had golden curls and lively eyes, giving him a strikingly handsome appearance. He no longer resembled the dirty, ragged boy from before.
“Sir…”
Raine stammered, unsure what to say.
“Would you like to become my guardian knight?”
Thor asked directly, smiling at Raine’s hesitation.
“If you agree, I’ll have someone teach you the ways of knighthood.”
Thor didn’t beat around the bush. In this medieval-like world, there was no need for drawn-out schemes or dramatic gestures.
He was a noble.
Raine was a commoner.
That was enough to define the situation.
Even Michael was slightly surprised by Thor’s offer to Raine.
As for Raine, his head snapped up, his eyes wide with shock and excitement as he looked at Thor.
“Sir!”
Raine’s voice trembled with emotion.
He was indeed a commoner, but he knew what knights represented—powerful, noble figures, far above ordinary people.
Never in his life had he dreamed of becoming one of them.
“What’s the matter? Are you unwilling?”
Thor asked with a smile, seeing Raine’s stunned expression.
“I’m willing!”
“I’m willing!”
“Sir, I swear by the Goddess of Life, I, Raine, will be your loyal guardian knight!”
Raine exclaimed, overwhelmed with joy. As he spoke, a soft green glow filled the air, and a diamond-shaped mark appeared on his forehead.
In this world, all were bathed in the light of the Goddess of Life. To swear by her name was to invoke her blessing, no matter who made the oath.
Raine’s vow was a declaration of his loyalty, fulfilling Thor’s request.
Watching this unfold, Thor was slightly surprised but soon smiled.
Everything had gone smoother than expected.
At this moment, Raine had officially become Thor’s guardian knight.
The guardian contract, witnessed by life and loyalty, could only be made by someone who was truly devoted. It was voluntary, not something that could be forced.
And once the bond was made, it meant that Raine had become Thor’s most loyal knight.
“Hahaha, excellent!”
“From today onward, you are my guardian knight, and my very first one!”
“Uncle Michael, could I trouble you to teach Raine some knightly skills over the next few days?”
Thor laughed with satisfaction and then turned to Michael with a polite request.
“Of course!”
Michael hesitated briefly, then glanced at Raine before nodding in agreement.
