Chapter 91: The Distribution of Interests
“Everyone, this is enough. You’ve all contributed plenty this time, so let’s leave it at that!”
“And compared to this, isn’t the greatest wealth the entire Maine River Valley? Right now, we’re the only ones left in control of it.”
Thor’s voice echoed, instantly pulling everyone’s thoughts back into focus. Simultaneously, the eyes of all present lit up.
“Lord Thor, you…!”
Baron Valmy spoke instinctively, but halfway through, he couldn’t help but purse his lips.
The others weren’t faring much better either.
For pioneering lords, the most crucial things are territory, subjects, and their own strength and power.
If you were to prioritize them, strength and territory come first, with subjects and power following after.
With strength, you can claim more and better territory, which leads to more subjects and the growth of your power.
And now, right in front of them lay the nearly deserted Maine River Valley.
Many pioneering lords had fled, abandoning their territories—lands they had developed over years, even more than a decade, and not just one parcel but numerous tracts of land, with all kinds of valuable resources. Compared to the magic cores, these were unimaginable treasures.
After all, this wasn’t some untamed wilderness.
This was developed land.
Even the three barons couldn’t help but breathe heavily.
And amidst their labored breaths and shining eyes, Thor gestured.
Soon, Raine entered.
He unfolded a map across the desk.
“Everyone, come and take a look.”
Thor chuckled softly as he spoke, and the five of them eagerly stepped forward to the desk.
“Raine, mark the territories of the pioneering lords who abandoned their lands in the Maine River Valley.”
Thor spoke softly.
“Yes!”
Raine quickly nodded in response.
Soon, he picked up a quill and began circling the areas on the map.
Numerous marks covered the entire Maine River Valley.
“The Maine River Valley forms a massive, crescent-shaped bay due to the river’s flow. The terrain here is flat, with fertile soil, making it ideal for large-scale agriculture. In the lower, middle, and upper reaches of the valley, as well as to the west, there were originally twenty-one pioneering lords. Including my own Eagle Ridge, that made twenty-two. Now, only six of us remain.”
“And according to the kingdom’s laws, any lord who abandons their land is stripped of their title. Even if they pay a redemption fee, they cannot reclaim their territory. The kingdom will redistribute the land. Since we are the lords who defeated the minotaurs, we are entitled to these lands.”
Thor spoke calmly, his expression serious.
As they listened to his words and looked at the territories Raine had marked, the five couldn’t help but breathe even heavier, their expressions barely contained.
“Lord Thor, how will the land be divided?”
Baron Valmy, who had been silent until now, took a deep breath and couldn’t help but ask.
As soon as he spoke, all eyes turned to Thor.
“Everyone, my Eagle Ridge is just starting its construction, and I don’t need much. There are five mines in the entire Maine River Valley: one medium-sized limestone mine in the south, one medium-sized iron mine in the north, and three small iron mines. I’m not interested in the iron mines or the limestone mine, but I do need this area and that area, as well as these pioneering lands.”
Thor spoke slowly, marking the dam’s location and a large portion of the territories belonging to Baron Gratton and Baron Valmy.
He wasn’t joking—if he intended to develop agriculture in the valley, he had to control the dam, no matter the contract. He was still pondering the best way to proceed, and this was the perfect opportunity.
He was certain the two would agree.
A medium-sized iron mine and three small iron mines—although not as abundant in mithril as a large iron mine, they still held considerable value due to the sheer volume of iron ore.
And indeed, that was the case.
“Agreed!”
“Lord Thor, we can agree to this!”
Baron Valmy gritted his teeth and was the first to agree.
With Valmy’s agreement, Baron Gratton eventually conceded as well.
As for the others, though tempted, they ultimately held back.
This time, the rewards were large enough that the decision didn’t affect them much.
After divvying up his own land, Thor began helping the others divide theirs.
Compared to his own needs for territory and security, the division of the others’ land was much simpler.
First, as mentioned earlier, the rewards this time were large enough to satisfy everyone’s needs.
Second, in this extraordinary world, personal strength dictates everything.
And the contributions made in this expansion war were enough to serve as a standard for judgment.
The process was soon completed.
In the end, the three barons reaped the greatest rewards.
Baron Valmy gained a medium-sized iron mine and the lands of two pioneering lords. Baron Gratton received three small iron mines and the lands of three pioneering lords. Both ceded part of their southern territories to Thor.
Baron Pape acquired five pioneering lands and a medium-sized limestone mine.
Sachi and Joz Anubi each received the lands of three pioneering lords, while Thor took the lands of four more.
Thor didn’t need the mines—the limestone mine wasn’t valuable, and although the iron mines were profitable, his large iron mine already produced far more. Besides, by ceding these two mines, the resources would ultimately flow back to him, since he controlled the key step in the production chain thanks to his goblins.
Compared to all that, the land was what he needed most.
Now, he controlled the majority of the central and upper Maine River Valley.
On the one hand, this prevented anyone from flooding his territories. On the other hand, it ensured that his lands could expand without issue.
And they were all connected.
Even now, should he become a baron, he would have ample room for growth.
For the next three years, he wouldn’t need to worry about space.
Afterward, he could continue expanding east, north, south, or even westward into untapped areas.
