- MWM Chapter 451
Although *Clairvoyance* is a basic illusion spell, not many mages can actually master and use it proficiently.
It’s not because it’s difficult to learn or drains a lot of magic energy.
If it were too difficult or consumed too much magic, it wouldn’t be classified as a beginner spell.
Learning *Clairvoyance* is easy; the real challenge is that to use it effectively, a mage needs a powerful mental strength to resonate with the world’s laws.
While it’s considered a beginner-level illusion spell, only the most talented or top-tier mages can wield it.
For Leo, this was not an issue. His mental strength was already extraordinarily powerful, and after the enhancement from his Dragonborn bloodline, it had become even stronger.
“Looks like it’s time to head to Winterhold,” Leo thought after absorbing all the knowledge his shadow clones had gathered.
During his time in Whiterun, he had spent his days in Dragonsreach reading books and his nights at The Bannered Mare, spending lavishly and mingling with merchants, adventurers, and locals to gather information.
By now, he had gained a better understanding of the world than most ordinary people, so there wasn’t much reason to stay longer.
Initially, he had planned to stay a few more days, but after learning about the *Meditation Technique*, which could enhance magic power, from Farengar’s books, he felt an urge to move on quickly.
However, just as he stepped out of the library and into the main hall of Dragonsreach, he heard the urgent voice of Irileth, the Whiterun guard captain:
“Farengar! Farengar! Come quickly, the guards have spotted a dragon nearby!”
“A dragon! Really? This is so exciting! Where did it appear? What did it do?”
Farengar, who had been studying the Dragonstone, rushed out, thrilled.
Besides his passion for magic, his greatest interest was in studying the supposedly extinct dragons. He was a true dragon enthusiast.
He had agreed to serve as Whiterun’s court wizard mainly because of the city’s history with dragon legends.
Unlike the Dragon Cult, Farengar didn’t worship dragons—he wanted to dissect them and unlock the secrets of dragon magic through their bodies.
Seeing how excited Farengar was about the dragon’s appearance, Irileth’s face showed clear disapproval.
“Farengar, I suggest you take this seriously!
“If a dragon is truly attacking Whiterun, we don’t even know if we’ll be able to defend the city.
“And even if we can, how many soldiers and civilians will die in the process?”
“Oh, I understand. I just got a little carried away,” Farengar replied, realizing how his reaction had been misunderstood.
Irileth relaxed her expression a bit.
“The guards saw it flying in from the southern mountains, hovering near the Western Watchtower. The Jarl has called an emergency meeting upstairs to discuss how to deal with it.”
The two continued talking as they headed upstairs to Dragonsreach’s council chambers.
Leo paused and rubbed his chin.
“A dragon attack, huh? That’s something worth checking out.”
Over the past few days, he had been focused on studying books and hadn’t had the chance to learn the Dragon Shout he had discovered at Bleak Falls Barrow.
Now that a dragon had appeared, it was the perfect opportunity to test his Dragonborn bloodline and its ability to absorb dragon souls to quickly master Dragon Shouts.
Additionally, he was curious to see just how powerful the dragons—once worshipped as gods—truly were in this world.
While Aedra and Daedra couldn’t physically manifest on Nirn, dragons had always existed in its history.
If the dragon wasn’t too strong, Leo would kill it and absorb its soul. If it was too powerful, he would retreat and wait until he grew stronger to take it down.
But judging by the stories he had read, dragons didn’t seem as terrifying as their legends made them out to be.
If they were truly that powerful, they wouldn’t have been nearly wiped out by humans after learning magic.
Due to the urgency of the situation, the meeting to address the dragon threat lasted less than ten minutes.
Using his heightened senses, Leo was able to eavesdrop on the entire discussion.
The meeting itself was simple. After assessing the situation, Jarl Balgruuf gave the following orders:
Irileth, along with Whiterun’s elite guards, would go to the Western Watchtower to try to kill the dragon, preventing it from reaching Whiterun and causing civilian casualties.
If the dragon turned out to be as powerful as the legends, they were instructed to retreat and return to the city, preserving their lives.
Meanwhile, Farengar would lead the remaining guards to fortify the city walls. If Irileth failed to kill the dragon and had to retreat, they would mount a desperate defense against the dragon’s assault.
Jarl Balgruuf himself would summon the city’s strongest fighters, particularly from the Companions, to assist in defending Whiterun and slaying the dragon.
Interestingly, Leo’s name hadn’t come up during the meeting.
In the eyes of Balgruuf and the others, Leo was merely a capable adventurer, probably no stronger than some of the Companions’ warriors.
A legendary dragon was too formidable an opponent for them to consider asking for his help.
As the meeting ended, Irileth rushed past Leo, gathering the elite guards to head to the Western Watchtower.
Leo followed suit, but after leaving Dragonsreach, he concealed himself and flew after them.
The Western Watchtower was a lookout post designed to monitor threats like bandits, wild beasts, and enemy forces. It was manned by an elite unit of Whiterun’s guards.
When Leo arrived, having followed Irileth from the clouds, the watchtower was already in ruins.
The thick stone walls had collapsed, marked with deep claw gouges, and the area was filled with burning flames and the charred bodies of fallen guards.
After a quick search, Irileth’s team found a single surviving guard in the remains of the tower.
The guard confirmed that a dragon had attacked the watchtower not long ago and that it was likely still nearby.
Just as he finished speaking, a deafening dragon roar echoed from the skies, and soon they spotted the legendary dragon circling overhead.
The dragon noticed them as well and began diving toward the watchtower.
Meanwhile, Leo, hidden in the clouds, frowned.
It wasn’t because the dragon was particularly powerful. In fact, he didn’t feel much of a threat from it.
What bothered him were the dragon’s roars.
To Irileth and the others, those roars were just loud and terrifying. But to Leo’s ears, the meaning behind the dragon’s Shouts was crystal clear.
If what the dragon was saying was true, then it wasn’t good news.
