- MWM Chapter 85
“They say the world’s thinnest books are American history and British cookbooks—turns out that’s not just a joke!”
Looking at the six dishes on the table, Leo couldn’t help but mentally remark. Aside from fish and chips, the rest were all French dishes.
“Mmm… this tastes surprisingly good.”
After sampling all six dishes, his eyes lit up.
Honestly, the food prepared using house-elf cooking magic would definitely be considered top-tier cuisine even in the non-magical world.
After all, a good chef needs excellent knife skills, precise control over cooking time, and a deep understanding of ingredients, all of which require extensive experience and natural talent. But with cooking magic, these elements are perfected through the power of magic. As long as you have the recipe, the dish will turn out well, and with a bit more effort, it’s easy to achieve mastery.
Take Wanda, for example. Even though she’s been trying hard to learn how to cook, the results can only be described as mediocre.
“Maybe I could memorize some principles and knowledge of cooking magic and later write a book for Wanda.”
Most sorcerers in the Marvel world don’t have their own internal source of magic and can’t absorb external energy to convert into magic. Their spells typically draw on the power of certain dimensional beings, which they then repay over time.
The sorcerers of Kamar-Taj, for instance, primarily borrow power from the Vishanti, while their Sorcerer Supreme, the Ancient One, borrows from multiple sources—but she’s so powerful that she doesn’t bother repaying them.
Wanda’s power, on the other hand, comes from the Chaos Magic, which originates from the dark god Chthon, one of the most potent ancient forces. Right now, since it hasn’t been fully awakened by the Mind Stone, she doesn’t know how to use Chaos Magic.
However, if she learns the underlying magical principles, she could potentially use Chaos Magic to perform corresponding spells.
This would be beneficial; after being awakened by the Mind Stone, Wanda, due to her lack of magical knowledge, relies on brute force with her Chaos Magic and struggles to control it.
But if she learns magic knowledge in advance and practices releasing Chaos Magic in a controlled way, she would be able to quickly master her power even after the Mind Stone activates her abilities.
The key is that this would greatly enhance Wanda’s self-defense abilities and cooking skills, which would also satisfy his own culinary cravings.
“Bally, go to Flourish and Blotts and buy every textbook from first to seventh year, along with any other magical books that we don’t already have at home.”
After finishing lunch, Leo pulled out a large handful of Galleons and handed them to Bally.
Tom Fawley wasn’t like Hermione—he was just an average wizard with some talent in Herbology and hadn’t been very diligent in his studies. The magical knowledge and spells stored in his memory weren’t extensive.
However, after his rebirth, Leo’s memory had greatly improved, to the point where he could nearly memorize things after seeing them once.
During these six months, in addition to mastering all the spells Tom knew, he planned to try and memorize every spell and piece of magical knowledge he could find.
Memorizing doesn’t mean instant mastery, but even if he leaves this world, he could continue to study and learn later.
Furthermore, many magical principles are interconnected—the more you learn, the more you understand, making it easier to grasp new spells quickly.
If his foundation is weak, even if he gets his hands on advanced spells later, it would be difficult to learn them.
Although Bally didn’t understand why her master wanted to do this, as a loyal house-elf, she wouldn’t question it. She took the Galleons and immediately Disapparated out of the room.
A moment later, she returned with a stack of books, then disappeared again, reappearing with more books.
After seven or eight trips, she finally stopped.
With Tom’s memories and a large collection of magical books, Leo took the wand and went upstairs to his bedroom to begin his magical studies.
…
A month later, Leo sat on the sofa, concentrating on a broken cup as he recited a spell:
“Reparo!”
The cup, which had been shattered into several pieces, began to reassemble as if time were reversing, and soon it looked as if it had never been broken.
“I’ve finally mastered most of the basic spells!”
Over the past thirty days, he had devoted nearly all his time—aside from sleeping and bathroom breaks—to memorizing magical books and repeatedly practicing the most basic spells.
From first-year spells like the Lumos, Levitation Charm, and Alohomora, to more advanced spells like the Repairing Charm, Severing Charm, and Transfiguration spells.
He had basically stopped running the herb shop, leaving meals and household chores to Bally, the house-elf.
The results were significant. Most basic spells, especially those Tom had already mastered, Leo could now cast successfully.
However, he still couldn’t successfully perform some of the more advanced and dangerous spells, like Apparition, Memory Charms, and False Memory Charms, or more harmful curses, poisons, and Dark Magic—spells typically learned by wizards over seventeen years old.
There were several reasons for this. For one, many of the advanced spells in the magical books were ones Tom Fawley himself hadn’t mastered. Relying solely on self-study from books without any prior knowledge made learning these spells much more difficult.
On the other hand, these spells were inherently complex, and even with Tom Fawley’s memories, mastering them proved challenging.
However, Leo had a plan.
Magic, like ninjutsu and martial arts, shares a common trait: reading books and studying theory without practice leads to inefficient learning. If he could engage in more practical experience, his learning speed would undoubtedly increase significantly.
“Bally, come here for a moment!”
At Leo’s call, Bally the house-elf immediately Apparated from the first floor to stand before him.
“Master, what are your orders?”
“Pack up; we’re going to stay at the main estate for a while.”
Leo instructed.
The Fawley family had a large estate in the suburbs of London, but it had fallen into disrepair since Tom Fawley was the last remaining wizard in his generation.
Tom preferred living in Diagon Alley, where he ran his shop, and didn’t want to stay in such a remote place—especially since it would remind him of his deceased relatives.
“Yes, my master!”
Bally waved her hands in the air, and the clothes in the closet, the magical books on the table, and various other items all floated up and neatly folded themselves, packing into a large trunk.
Leo grabbed the trunk and stuffed it into the pouch, then took Bally’s small hand.
“Take me to the main estate!”
Bally cast her elf Apparition spell, transporting them instantly from the room. When they reappeared, they were standing in front of a luxurious estate in the southern suburbs of London.
“There are many things I can’t do in Diagon Alley, but here, that shouldn’t be a problem.”
