- MWM Chapter 95
When Newt heard Leo’s words, his eyes lit up with a newfound admiration.
If before he saw Leo as just a kind-hearted wizard, now he looked at him like a kindred spirit. After all, Newt had always believed, “There’s nothing strange about creatures; it’s just that people’s are too narrow-minded.”
‘Got him right where I want him!’ Leo thought, sensing Newt’s sudden shift in attitude.
He had deliberately said those words, knowing Newt’s personality. Although Leo wasn’t particularly interested in Newt’s magical creatures, especially since he currently had no way to bring them into other worlds, he was very keen on learning Newt’s incredibly advanced Undetectable Extension Charm.
Most wizards, like himself and old Manu, could only create a space of a few dozen square meters with the Undetectable Extension Charm. But Newt had practically created an entire small world inside his suitcase, showing a level of mastery that probably surpassed anyone else in the wizarding world.
By building a good relationship with Newt, Leo could later use the excuse of wanting to keep some magical creatures himself as a way to ask Newt for advice on the Undetectable Extension Charm.
“Do you know about Graphorns? I discovered a pair in the Far East. They might be the last breeding pair left.”
“You found Graphorns? I thought they were extinct! It’s said that their hide is tougher than a dragon’s and can repel most spells.”
“Yes, they are naturally aggressive. Many trolls try to ride them but usually get thrown off and end up badly injured.”
“Haha, that’s fascinating! I didn’t know that. Truly amazing!”
And so, they chatted as they walked, discussing everything from magical creatures to Hogwarts. Upon discovering that they were both from Hufflepuff, they instantly grew even closer.
Tina, who was leading the two of them, was baffled by how cheerfully they were chatting despite the looming threat of facing a trial at the Ministry. However, she couldn’t help but be somewhat uplifted by their conversation.
Listening to their amusing tales about magical creatures and their optimistic outlook lightened the frustration she had been feeling since her demotion to the Wand Permit Office.
Thus, the three of them entered the Ministry, taking the magical elevator up to the Major Investigations Department.
“The International Confederation of Wizards is threatening to send a delegation. They believe yesterday’s attack is linked to Grindelwald!”
MACUSA President Seraphina Picquery was discussing the mysterious magical creature attack with senators and Aurors when the door suddenly opened, and Tina walked in with Leo and Newt.
“Ms. Goldstein, I’ve made myself clear—you’re no longer an Auror,” Picquery said, frowning impatiently at Tina.
Tina attempted to explain, but Picquery interrupted her before she could say more.
“This office is for major cases only. Get out!”
“Yes… yes, Madam President,” Tina replied, reluctantly turning to lead Leo and Newt out.
Throughout the exchange, Leo’s attention was focused on a middle-aged wizard standing behind Picquery. He knew that this man, who appeared to be MACUSA’s Head of Magical Security, Percival Graves, was actually the dark wizard Grindelwald in disguise.
The real Percival Graves had likely been killed by Grindelwald long ago.
“Wait!”
As the three were about to leave the Major Investigations Department, Picquery suddenly called out, pointing at Leo.
“Aren’t you Tom Fawley?”
“Yes, Madam President,” Leo replied with a slight bow and a smile.
Picquery nodded approvingly.
“As expected from a member of the Fawley family. I’ve heard that you captured the dark wizard Manu Angel. He killed one of our finest Aurors. Well done. On behalf of MACUSA, I’d like to thank you. Ms. Goldstein can take you to collect the reward for Manu Angel.”
“It was my duty,” Leo replied, nodding. He hadn’t expected to receive another reward in America.
After all, old Manu was wanted by the magical authorities in fifteen countries. If Leo wanted to, he could probably travel around and collect rewards from all fifteen countries.
But the reward wasn’t what mattered most to him. What mattered was that Picquery recognizing him meant that he now had a bit of international recognition.
“My apologies for the misunderstanding,” Tina said as they left the Major Investigations Department. She was now certain that Leo and Newt didn’t know each other and that their meeting had been purely coincidental.
After helping Leo collect the reward, she told him he was free to leave.
“I think I’ll wait for Newt,” Leo said, determined to stay. He had just established a rapport with Newt and knew that Newt would soon be released.
Tina, seeing Leo’s insistence, didn’t argue and led them both to the Wand Permit Office.
However, midway through Newt’s deposition, the man disguised as the Head of Magical Security, Grindelwald, arrived and ordered Tina to open Newt’s suitcase.
What they found wasn’t magical creatures but a pile of bread.
It turned out that Newt’s suitcase and Jacob’s were identical in appearance, and during their scuffle in the alley outside the bank, they had accidentally swapped them.
Leo had witnessed the swap but hadn’t said anything.
With no magical creatures in Newt’s suitcase, the charges of illegally keeping magical creatures and causing disturbances couldn’t stick, and Newt was released.
“I can’t believe you didn’t wipe that Muggle’s memory. If someone questions me later, I’m done for,” Tina said worriedly as they walked outside MACUSA.
She had considered detaining Newt for failing to Obliviate the Muggle but realized they needed to retrieve the suitcase first, so she let it go.
“Don’t worry, I’ll find my suitcase. It’s just that your laws here are too backward, banning all magical creatures. They’re actually quite lovely,” Newt replied, then turned to Leo and said,
“Thank you, Tom. This had nothing to do with you, but you got caught up in it anyway.”
“Don’t mention it, Newt. I’m just traveling, and this turned out to be quite exciting,” Leo said with a slight smile.
