Chapter 163: Infiltrating the Tower, Pain Strikes!
The two arrived at a secluded corner, where Jiraiya summoned Gamaken to deliver instructions.
Using a sealing technique, Jiraiya handed over the “key” to the Nine-Tails’ seal. “Don’t worry. If the Fourth Hokage entrusted this to us, he must have had his reasons,” Fang Ye said calmly.
Jiraiya nodded in agreement, visibly reassured by the sentiment.
Seeing their firm resolve, Gamaken sighed and refrained from further objections.
“Jiraiya-sensei, I have a plan to infiltrate the western tower,” Fang Ye suggested.
“Oh?” Jiraiya raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Let’s hear it.”
“I have the uniform of an Amegakure ninja, and no one’s recognized me so far. You can use your Toad Shadow Parallel Technique to hide in my shadow, and we’ll sneak in together.” Fang Ye laid out his idea, which was, in fact, the same method Jiraiya had used in the original timeline.
“I see…” Jiraiya’s eyes narrowed. “But if we’re discovered, you’ll be the first to face their attack.”
“I’m not afraid,” Fang Ye said with a shake of his head, his confidence unshaken.
Given his abilities, there were few in this world who could actually harm him.
Seeing Fang Ye’s determination, Jiraiya had no choice but to relent. “Be careful, then.”
With a nod of acknowledgment, Jiraiya concealed himself in Fang Ye’s shadow.
Fang Ye turned his gaze toward the towering structure in the west, its spire piercing the clouds. “Time to go.”
With a soft murmur, he began his approach.
The rain had stopped, and Fang Ye walked through the streets naturally, even exchanging brief greetings with a few passersby—though he didn’t know them. Keeping his interactions minimal, he continued toward the tower.
Before long, they arrived at its base.
“I have urgent information for Angel-sama!” Fang Ye announced to the guards at the entrance.
“What information? Do you think you can meet Angel-sama just because you say so?” One of the guards glared, his hand resting on the hilt of his kunai.
“I’ve discovered intruders!” Fang Ye said loudly, his tone grave.
The guards froze, their expressions shifting.
“Intruders? That’s serious… but why should we believe you?” one asked skeptically, clearly unwilling to let Fang Ye pass so easily.
“If I’m lying, Angel-sama will deal with me herself. But if you delay and we miss our chance…” Fang Ye fixed them with a piercing gaze. “You know the consequences, don’t you?”
“This…”
The guards hesitated, their nerves visibly fraying. After a brief moment of deliberation, they stepped aside.
“You’d better be telling the truth. If not, it won’t just be Angel-sama—you’ll have me to answer to.”
“And me.” The second guard waved his kunai menacingly to emphasize the threat.
Fang Ye merely cast a cold glance their way before walking inside.
As the stone doors creaked open, Fang Ye stepped into a vast, empty chamber.
Suddenly, countless pieces of paper materialized, wrapping around him in an instant!
At the same time, more sheets of paper coalesced in front of him, forming the figure of Konan. Wielding a spear made of paper, she lunged at Fang Ye’s head.
“Fire Release: Flame Bullet!”
Jiraiya leaped from Fang Ye’s shadow, unleashing a jutsu to counter Konan’s attack.
At the same moment, Fang Ye made his move. He tore through the paper binding him with sheer force and threw a powerful punch at Konan.
With a rustling sound, Konan’s body dispersed into countless sheets of paper, which scattered before reforming at a distance.
“So, Angel-sama is you, Konan,” Jiraiya said with a wry smile, addressing his former student. “You’ve grown into quite the woman.”
Jiraiya had believed Konan had perished during the war. Seeing her now, as Pain’s spokesperson, was a bittersweet revelation.
“Jiraiya-sensei, you…” Konan recognized him instantly. Her gaze then shifted to the man who had just delivered a devastating punch.
Fang Ye removed his mask, revealing a calm, youthful face.
“Just an ordinary ninja,” he said with an air of indifference.
“Not even going to give me your name? Then you can die.”
Konan’s voice turned cold as she ascended into the air. Behind her, countless pieces of paper formed into the shape of wings.
“Does having wings automatically make you an angel?” Fang Ye mocked.
Konan didn’t respond. Instead, she unleashed a barrage of paper projectiles at them.
“Serious Punch!” Fang Ye struck with full force, the sheer wind pressure scattering the incoming paper attack and slamming into Konan.
Boom! Konan’s body exploded, half of her head dissolving into paper. If not for her quick reaction, she might have been killed outright.
Realizing the strength of her opponents, Konan prepared another wave of paper attacks. Her task was to stall them until Pain arrived.
“Toad Oil Bullet!”
Jiraiya formed a hand seal and spat a stream of oil, drenching Konan and rendering her unable to transform into paper.
“Covered in oil, you can’t become paper anymore,” Jiraiya said with a knowing smile as his hair extended, binding Konan tightly.
“Don’t kill her. I have questions,” Jiraiya said. Fang Ye nodded in agreement.
“Why have you ended up like this? What happened to Nagato and Yahiko? Who is Pain? And why did you join the Akatsuki?” Jiraiya asked, his tone grave.
Konan didn’t answer. Instead, she said flatly, “Do you regret not listening to Orochimaru back then? Do you wish you’d killed us when you had the chance?”
Jiraiya shook his head, his face calm but sorrowful.
“I don’t regret saving you. But I am deeply saddened.
“You were my students. I taught you how to survive, and now you attack me without hesitation…” He paused, his voice heavy. “It breaks my heart.”
Konan hesitated, then replied, “Sensei, you don’t understand us at all.”
“You’re right—I don’t. All I know are the rumors about you and your deaths that followed soon after.” Jiraiya’s tone hardened, becoming more like a teacher admonishing his student. “And this is your reason for joining the Akatsuki?”
Konan remained silent. There was no need to speak further—Pain had arrived.
Behind her, a man with orange hair tied into a braid appeared, his presence commanding. He stared down at the three of them.
“This is the result of endless trials. You won’t understand, Jiraiya-sensei…”
Fang Ye’s eyes narrowed as he assessed the newcomer.
“The Animal Path… Pain.”
Jiraiya focused intently, recognizing the Rinnegan immediately.
“Is it you, Nagato?”
“You’re just an outsider. There’s no need for you to know,” Pain replied coldly, clapping his hands together.
“Summoning Jutsu!”
