Chapter 169: The Battle Begins
Yahiko’s body hovered in mid-air.
As his words faded, he extended his arms outward.
In the next moment, an invisible force emanated from him, spreading rapidly in all directions.
“What is this?” Jiraiya gasped, his mouth agape at the immense energy radiating before him.
“What kind of jutsu is this?!” Fukasaku exclaimed in shock.
Yahiko’s display of power was so bizarre that even the three seasoned warriors couldn’t make sense of it.
Fang Ye, however, knew exactly what this technique was.
In the original story, Yahiko had used this technique to subdue Kakashi and others effortlessly. Later, an advanced version of this technique—Shinra Tensei—was used to level the entirety of Konoha.
This was one of the Rinnegan’s abilities and Yahiko’s most iconic move as the Deva Path.
“No matter what it is, just run!” Fang Ye shouted, grabbing Jiraiya and sprinting away.
Boom!
Behind them, the expanding energy of Shinra Tensei spread relentlessly, obliterating everything in its path.
Walls crumbled like tofu under the mysterious force, disintegrating into debris.
The energy continued to pursue Fang Ye and Jiraiya, gaining ground with terrifying speed.
“This attack is so strange—I’ve never seen anything like it!” Jiraiya said, his voice grim as he followed Fang Ye.
“Indeed. I wonder if the Great Toad Sage has any insights…” Fukasaku mused from Jiraiya’s shoulder.
Shima, too, seemed puzzled. The abilities of these Pain paths were nothing short of eerie.
“Could this be his unique power?” Shima speculated aloud. “Although they share their vision, each one seems to have distinct functions. That tall, thin one hasn’t revealed his abilities yet.”
“And the one we’ve been assuming is Nagato… he started off with a devastating technique. He might have even more trump cards up his sleeve,” Shima added thoughtfully.
“That’s true,” Fukasaku nodded. “The big one has only absorbed Jiraiya’s chakra attacks so far and hasn’t made any direct moves.”
Fang Ye remained silent, focusing on running. He was secretly impressed—they had deduced most of the truth. This unexpected clarity reduced potential complications.
The trio moved with incredible speed, quickly distancing themselves from the battle site. Yahiko’s Shinra Tensei began to wane, its energy dissipating after reaching its limits.
The destructive force slowed, ultimately leaving the three far beyond its reach.
“Finally,” Jiraiya muttered, wiping his forehead as he glanced back at the devastated battlefield.
“That’s a devastating weapon. Used in a crowd, its power could rival a nuclear bomb…” he murmured, turning his gaze toward Fang Ye.
“Kid, did you catch what I said earlier?”
“Huh?” Fang Ye blinked, looking at Jiraiya in confusion.
“Go back to Konoha and report this information to Tsunade. She needs to analyze it immediately,” Jiraiya said, his tone growing serious. “I have a feeling they’re planning to act soon.”
Fang Ye’s expression hardened. He realized Jiraiya was preparing to sacrifice himself.
Shaking his head, Fang Ye refused.
He had come here precisely to save Jiraiya. Otherwise, he could have stayed in Konoha and completed his mission.
“Listen, this information is critical. If Tsunade doesn’t receive it in time and we die here…” Jiraiya’s voice dimmed, his expression darkening. “The next step will be a massacre in Konoha.”
“Jiraiya-sensei, you’re overthinking it,” Fang Ye replied firmly.
Jiraiya paused, stunned by the interruption. His urgency deepened.
Fang Ye gestured for calm, speaking slowly but resolutely.
“First, what we’ve seen is likely only a fraction of their abilities—a mere iceberg’s tip,” Fang Ye said. Hearing this, Jiraiya’s intense gaze softened, and he nodded reluctantly.
“Second, we initially thought there was only one opponent. Then there were three. Now there are four.” Fang Ye ticked off his points on his fingers. “There’s no guarantee this is all of them. If I leave and more appear, wouldn’t that put you in even greater danger?
“Moreover, without all the information, Tsunade-sama might misjudge the situation. That could lead to disastrous decisions…”
Fang Ye’s tone grew heavy, his brow furrowed in thought. His concern was evident, and Jiraiya couldn’t ignore it.
“Additionally,” Fang Ye continued, “techniques like that destructive one we just saw must consume a massive amount of chakra. He can’t use it frequently. That will be our opening.”
Fang Ye’s unwavering resolve shone through.
“Alright…” Jiraiya sighed, finally persuaded.
“I didn’t expect you to convince me so easily, young man,” Fukasaku said, clearly impressed. He gave Fang Ye a sly wink.
Shima also cast an approving look. “Kid, when this is over, come to my house for dinner. Jiraiya, you too.”
Jiraiya’s face paled at the thought. Memories of Shima’s cooking—a writhing bowl of insect stew drenched in sauce—resurfaced, leaving him visibly shaken.
“Let’s focus on the battle first,” Jiraiya said with a nervous laugh, turning toward the approaching enemy.
Sure enough, Yahiko, the Deva Path, was leading the charge, with three other paths in pursuit.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Yahiko’s voice rang out as he extended his right hand toward Fang Ye.
“Bansho Ten’in!” (Universal Pull!)
In an instant, an invisible force latched onto Fang Ye, yanking him into the air and pulling him toward Yahiko’s outstretched palm.
“Kid!” Jiraiya shouted, frantically forming hand seals.
“Tongue Cutting Slash!”
Fukasaku’s tongue shot out, infused with chakra, sharp as steel. It whipped toward Yahiko, aiming to strike before he could grab Fang Ye.
But the Preta Path intervened, his bulky frame shielding Yahiko. He raised a barrier, absorbing all the chakra from Fukasaku’s tongue and rendering it harmless.
“Sage Art: Hair Needle Barrage!” Jiraiya unleashed another attack, but the Preta Path absorbed the chakra-infused needles effortlessly.
Fukasaku quickly retracted his tongue, avoiding further danger.
Meanwhile, Fang Ye was hurtling toward Yahiko at breakneck speed.
“Die,” Yahiko said coldly, a black metallic rod extending from his palm, glinting menacingly as it aimed straight for Fang Ye…
