Chapter 44: Barging into Uncle Nine’s Territory!
In a flash of white light.
When Fang Ye regained his sight, he found himself in a narrow alleyway.
Dirty water flowed through the alley, emitting a foul stench that made Fang Ye frown.
His gaze shifted to the people moving about outside the alley.
Most of the passersby had Asian faces, dressed in traditional long robes from the Republican era, though some were wearing Western-style clothing and riding in rickshaws.
Fang Ye stepped out of the alley.
Outside, he found a bustling street full of people.
The buildings were relatively low, with the tallest being just three or four stories.
On both sides of the street were various general stores and street vendors.
Shouts and calls to customers echoed as many common folk haggled with vendors.
Some wealthy women were whisked by in rickshaws.
‘So, this is what the Republican era looks like!’ Fang Ye thought, a bit awestruck by the nostalgic scene before him.
While Fang Ye observed the street, many people on the street were also quietly watching him.
It was mainly because of how impressive Fang Ye looked!
Tall and well-built, dressed in a perfectly fitted tailcoat, wearing shiny leather shoes, and carrying himself with a refined air…
Everyone thought he must be the young master of some noble family.
Ignoring the attention, Fang Ye approached a street vendor.
The vendor, an elderly man in his fifties, was selling porcelain wares like bowls and vases.
Seeing Fang Ye’s refined appearance, the old vendor quickly put on a welcoming smile. “Sir, is there anything you’d like?”
Fang Ye wasn’t here to buy anything. Instead, he asked, “Excuse me, can you tell me how to get to the mortuary?”
The old man was a bit disappointed that Fang Ye wasn’t here to buy, but he didn’t dare offend someone who looked so distinguished.
“Sir, if you follow this street straight ahead, you’ll leave the town. After that, you’ll find a fork in the road—take the right path, and you’ll reach the mortuary.”
“Thank you, sir!” Fang Ye thanked him and quickly moved on.
To avoid any complications, Fang Ye didn’t want to waste any time and started his plan immediately!
…
Following the old man’s directions, Fang Ye left Renjia Town and soon came across the fork in the road.
He took the right path, and after a few minutes, a large old house appeared in his view.
It was the only building in the middle of a desolate mountain area.
This had to be the mortuary.
Fang Ye strode toward the house.
The mortuary was surrounded by a courtyard.
Standing outside the gate, he could hear the sound of a rooster crowing, as if someone inside was feeding chickens.
Fang Ye calmly approached the door and knocked.
*Knock! Knock! Knock!*
“Who’s there?”
A man’s voice came from inside, followed by the sound of footsteps approaching. Soon, the door opened, revealing a man standing in the entrance.
The man was small and thin, with a face that looked far older than his years. His facial features were also rather unbalanced, giving him a comical, if not ugly, appearance.
Dressed in old-fashioned clothing, he looked even more ridiculous.
Fang Ye, knowing the story well, recognized him instantly.
This was one of Uncle Nine’s apprentices: Wen Cai.
“Who are you?” Wen Cai asked as he looked Fang Ye up and down.
Fang Ye didn’t answer directly. Instead, he smiled and asked, “Is Uncle Nine home?”
“You’re looking for my master?” Wen Cai glanced over Fang Ye, noting his refined clothes and demeanor. His mind immediately began to turn.
“What do you need my master for?” Wen Cai asked. “I’m Uncle Nine’s true disciple. If it’s funeral rites you’re looking for, I can handle it just as well.”
This guy…
He had mistaken Fang Ye for a potential customer.
“Sorry, I only want to see Uncle Nine,” Fang Ye said with a polite smile, asking again, “Is he home?”
Wen Cai frowned but didn’t dare to be rude. He replied, “My master went into town. He should be back soon. You can come in and wait if you want.”
Hearing that Uncle Nine wasn’t home, a glint of excitement flashed in Fang Ye’s eyes.
Even better!
If Uncle Nine were here, his strength and Taoist skills might cause Fang Ye some trouble…
“No need!”
As soon as Fang Ye finished speaking, he swiftly grabbed Wen Cai.
With his immense strength, Wen Cai was instantly immobilized.
“What are you doing?!” Wen Cai shouted, both angry and frightened.
Fang Ye didn’t respond. He simply lifted Wen Cai with one hand and carried him into a nearby side room.
With his current strength, carrying a person was no harder than picking up a small chicken.
Inside the room, there were many coffins.
To save time, Fang Ye decided to ask Wen Cai directly.
“Which one is Master Ren’s body?”
Wen Cai cursed, “You think I’d tell you? When my master returns, you’re dead!”
Fang Ye calmly reached out and lightly twisted Wen Cai’s arm.
*Crack!*
With a soft sound, Wen Cai’s arm was dislocated.
This was Fang Ye being merciful, only dislocating it. If he had used his full strength, he could have easily torn the arm off.
“Ahh!!” Wen Cai screamed in pain.
Fang Ye, his expression unchanging, coldly warned, “I’m in a hurry. If you don’t tell me, I’ll break your other arm, then your legs, and finally your neck…”
Wen Cai wasn’t the type to withstand pain.
Terrified, he immediately begged, “Don’t, don’t! I’ll tell you… It’s the first coffin on the left! Master Ren is inside!”
Hearing this, Fang Ye walked over and opened the coffin.
The heavy lid would have been difficult for an ordinary person to lift, but for Fang Ye, it was effortless.
Inside the coffin lay a terrifying-looking corpse.
Master Ren had been found.
