OKSTS Chapter 48

Dinner consisted of a large portion of white rice.

The dishes were a carp and a small plate of vegetables.

After all, it was a rural village.

It was impossible for them to offer Fang Ye a feast with lavish meat and fish.

To be honest, such a meal was already quite generous for a rural area in these times.

Most of the rice went into Fang Ye’s stomach.

Su Ziqiu also ate a big bowl.

After walking all afternoon, she was both exhausted and famished.

After finishing her meal.

Su Ziqiu shyly set down her bowl and whispered, “Normally, I can’t eat this much…”

She wasn’t sure why she even felt the need to explain that…

Fang Ye smiled and said, “Eating more is good. As your physical attributes increase, you’ll need to take in more nutrients, or your body might get out of balance… You rest for a while. I’ll return these bowls to the village chief.”

With that, Fang Ye stood up and left with the empty bowls.

A short while later.

Fang Ye arrived at the village chief’s house and knocked on the door.

The door was opened by the village chief, who was wearing slippers and seemed ready for bed.

In rural villages like this one.

There wasn’t much to do in the evening.

Most villagers went to bed early.

“Village chief, thank you for your hospitality. I came to return the bowls,” Fang Ye explained.

“You could have waited until tomorrow!”

The village chief, being polite, invited him in, “Come in for a glass of water.”

Fang Ye waved his hand, “No need. My wife is scared of being alone, she’s waiting for me.”

Hearing this, the village chief chuckled, “I understand, I understand. Go on, rest early then.”

Fang Ye, however, didn’t leave immediately. He asked, “Village chief, earlier you mentioned bandits in the area?”

“Yes!”

The village chief sighed, “Several nearby villages have been looted.”

“In that case, do you know where their hideout is?”

“Hmm?”

The village chief looked at Fang Ye, puzzled, “Young man, why are you asking about the bandits? What are you planning?”

Fang Ye smiled, “Since you’ve given us shelter, I want to repay the favor by helping deal with the bandits.”

“You… you’re going to take on those bandits?” The village chief looked even more surprised.

Fang Ye gave a faint smile.

He had already figured out that this village chief wasn’t as simple as he appeared.

That afternoon.

The only reason the village chief had agreed to let Fang Ye and Su Ziqiu into the village wasn’t out of kindness. He had sensed that Fang Ye wasn’t someone to be trifled with, and feared that turning him away would provoke trouble.

After all, anyone who could carry a coffin with a body inside couldn’t be an ordinary person.

The meal brought to Fang Ye later was partly an attempt to keep him appeased…

Of course.

Fang Ye understood all of this but saw no need to point it out.

He was content to let it go unsaid.

“Village chief, you’ve probably noticed by now—I’m quite strong. I trained in martial arts as a kid. Dealing with a gang of bandits shouldn’t be a problem.”

Hearing this, the village chief grinned knowingly, then pointed to the left.

“The bandits’ hideout is on that mountain over there.”

Fang Ye looked in the direction the village chief was pointing. In the moonlight, he could just make out the silhouette of a small mountain.

“Alright, village chief. Tomorrow morning, I’ll drive those bandits away!”

The village chief was quick to respond, “We’ll be in your debt, warrior. Tomorrow morning, the villagers will see you off with a proper send-off!”

Fang Ye smiled, pleased, “Then I won’t disturb your rest any further.”

In the woodshed.

Su Ziqiu felt a sense of relief when Fang Ye returned.

After all, she was still a young woman.

Being left alone with a coffin, especially one containing a corpse on the verge of turning into a zombie, was undeniably terrifying.

“Fang Ye, according to Professor Zhou’s calculations, the zombie should reanimate tonight…” Su Ziqiu couldn’t help but remind him.

Fang Ye noticed her unease and reassured her, “I know. You go ahead and sleep. If anything happens, I’ll wake you.”

“Don’t worry, nothing will go wrong with me here!”

If anyone else had said those words, Su Ziqiu would have scoffed.

But when Fang Ye said it, she believed him.

Because back in the second Forbidden Land, Fang Ye had “saved” her by facing the vicious lickers head-on without hesitation.

“Aren’t you tired?” Su Ziqiu asked.

Fang Ye shook his head, “My mental attributes are high. Staying up all night is nothing.”

He wasn’t exaggerating.

With his current mental strength, he could go two nights without sleep and still be fully functional.

Su Ziqiu didn’t say anything further.

She obediently lay down.

Having Fang Ye nearby made her feel safe…

Around 11 PM.

*Thud!*

Suddenly, a noise came from the coffin.

It wasn’t loud.

But in the stillness of the night, even the smallest sound was amplified several times over.

Su Ziqiu jolted awake, her eyes filled with fear as she looked toward the coffin.

“Go outside and close the door. Don’t let anyone come near. I’ll handle this!”

In the darkness, Fang Ye’s voice was calm and steady.

Su Ziqiu glanced toward him.

In the dim light, it seemed as if Fang Ye’s eyes were glowing brightly.

“Be careful…” Su Ziqiu urged, standing up and moving outside to shut the door.

Despite her fear, she didn’t go far, staying right by the entrance.

At this point, the plan had gone too far for her to back out.

What came next.

Whether Fang Ye could subdue the zombie was the most crucial part of the plan.

If Fang Ye failed, they would both be done for!!
