Chapter 57: Tracking! Uncle Nine’s Suspicion
Along the way…
Uncle Nine noticed something unusual about these young people. Even the girl, who looked delicate, had astonishing stamina! They trekked through the wilderness all morning without a single complaint of exhaustion or anyone falling behind.
By noon, Uncle Nine led Zhao Fusheng and the others to a bandit hideout. However, the hideout had already been reduced to a pile of ashes!
Lu Feng picked up a piece of charred wood from the ground and said calmly, “It’s still warm, meaning it wasn’t burned down too long ago.”
A young man found a damaged knife and said to the group, “Although this knife isn’t of great quality, the fact that it’s chipped shows it struck something very hard.”
The girl, Meng Shu, then discovered a large pit in the center of the hideout.
“Come and look, there are a lot of charred bodies here!”
Everyone hurried over. Uncle Nine glanced at the scene, his face immediately changing. “This is bad!” he blurted out.
“Uncle Nine, what’s wrong?” Meng Shu asked.
“These corpses… they are full of dark energy. They had all undergone corpse transformation!” Uncle Nine’s expression darkened.
Hearing this, the group immediately understood what had happened. It must have been those two scoundrels from the Martial Saint Academy who controlled the corpse of Master Ren, allowing it to bite and kill these people. Once they transformed into zombies, they were slain again to boost their mission rating!
Realizing that their plan had been thwarted, the group was furious.
One of the young men cursed, “Damn it! When I find them, I’ll turn them into zombies before killing them!”
“Hmm?” Uncle Nine turned to the young man and, frowning, asked, “You seem to know a lot about zombies?”
The young man realized he had misspoken, raising Uncle Nine’s suspicion. He quickly backpedaled, “Uncle Nine, I was just talking nonsense. Don’t take it seriously…”
The others glared at the young man, making him even more embarrassed.
Though Uncle Nine didn’t pursue the matter further, he grew increasingly suspicious of the young people’s intentions and became wary of them.
Meng Shu tried to smooth things over, saying, “Uncle Nine, we should focus on tracking them down!”
Uncle Nine said no more, continuing to use his “Immortal’s Guiding Hand” technique to track Master Ren’s whereabouts.
An hour later, they arrived at a nearby village. The village chief, upon seeing them, was surprised and cautious.
“Who are you? What business do you have in our village?”
Uncle Nine stepped forward politely, cupping his hands in greeting. “You must be the village chief?”
The chief nodded. “I am.”
“Village chief, have you seen anyone carrying a coffin pass by?” Uncle Nine asked.
Seeing the righteousness in Uncle Nine’s expression, the chief, who didn’t see him as a threat, thought for a moment and replied truthfully, “Yes, someone carrying a coffin passed through yesterday evening. But it wasn’t just one person; it was a young couple.”
Before Uncle Nine could respond, a voice from behind exclaimed, “It’s them!”
It was the same quick-tongued young man.
Uncle Nine turned around and looked at the group with a meaningful gaze. “Oh? You know the people who stole the corpse?”
He was now certain these young people were hiding something from him.
Seeing Uncle Nine’s suspicious look, the young man knew he had slipped up again.
“Song Ming, if you don’t keep quiet, no one will mistake you for a mute!” another young man shouted angrily. What a disastrous teammate!
Song Ming, knowing he was in the wrong, didn’t dare argue and his face flushed with embarrassment.
Lu Feng gave his teammate a glance and then stepped forward, saying to Uncle Nine, “Uncle Nine, we do know them. They are our fellow disciples, but they strayed onto a dark path. Stealing Master Ren’s body was likely their way of raising zombies. Our master was aware of this, so he sent us here to clean house!”
This explanation shocked Meng Shu and the others. They had never expected Lu Feng, who was usually so serious and reserved, to lie so smoothly without even blinking.
Even Zhao Fusheng looked at Lu Feng with surprise.
However, Uncle Nine, already on guard, was not easily fooled. He was now only half-convinced by Lu Feng’s story.
“We’ll discuss this later…” Uncle Nine said, before turning back to the village chief and asking, “Chief, who lives in that valley?”
“The valley? It was once occupied by a group of bandits who were notorious for their wickedness!” the chief replied, then asked Uncle Nine, “Daoist, have you been to the valley? Are the bandits all dead?”
Seeing Uncle Nine nod, the chief exclaimed with relief, “Good! Justice has been served! The hero who came last night kept his word—he’s a true hero!”
These words were said with an underlying message.
The chief had overheard Lu Feng’s earlier statement and felt it was unjust. To him, Fang Ye and the young woman didn’t seem like bad people. Moreover, they had rid the village of the bandit menace, which had earned them the village’s gratitude.
Of course, the chief was a smart man and wouldn’t openly criticize or offend anyone. Instead, he subtly reminded Uncle Nine of this.
Hearing the chief’s words, Uncle Nine felt somewhat reassured. The fact that they had used the bandits for their zombie-raising indicated they still had a sense of morality and were unlikely to harm innocent people.
At the same time, Uncle Nine became even more suspicious of Lu Feng and his group’s true motives…
