Chapter 34: The Onmyoji Ryuno
On a certain small island, pirates were partying through the night.
There was a tavern called “The Sea’s Bubble,” which had originally been used for storing illegal goods and arms. Over time, it became a popular gathering spot for pirates.
The reason was simple: the tavern’s owner had powerful connections, and no navy ship had ever set foot on the island. Anyone, regardless of who they were, could take refuge here—provided their pockets were filled with Beli.
The Sea’s Bubble Tavern was nothing more than a simple structure made of wood and tin, resembling a weathered old ship. The windows were covered with thick wooden planks patched together over time, giving it a rustic charm that made every pirate passing by stop in admiration.
Among them were members of the Black Cat Pirates, who had just disembarked to indulge in some revelry.
“I like the feel of this place,” Fang Bo chuckled, pushing open the wooden door and stepping into the noisy tavern.
Just as he expected, the inside was filled with rough wooden tables and chairs, scarred by countless weapon strikes, suggesting brawls were quite common here.
Silently, he lit a cigar—a trophy from a previous victory. It had no special properties, but it masked the mingling smells of tobacco, strong liquor, and sweat in the air.
This unique “fragrance” was a temptation no pirate could resist. Fang Bo felt perfectly at ease in this environment.
Ordering a glass of strong whiskey, he quietly sipped his drink, observing the crowd to see if there were any promising talents to recruit.
“Hey, have you heard? The Pirate Admiral just attacked a naval base.”
“That news has been everywhere. Poor 153rd Branch has had a rough time.”
“I heard they executed Kuro of a Hundred Plans?”
“Hah, I always said the Black Cat Pirates were finished. Now look— even their captain got caught.”
Stopping Paul, who was ready to erupt in rage, Fang Bo calmly gestured for him to wait. “Not yet. Be patient.”
“Understood.” Paul, ever obedient to Fang Bo’s commands, sat back down, though his actions caught the attention of a few nearby onlookers.
Fang Bo, still holding his cigar, casually turned his head to look at a corner of the tavern.
The place was packed with pirates exchanging their tales of adventure, a room filled to the brim with people. Yet the corner stood conspicuously empty, as if even the most boorish pirate wouldn’t dare approach.
There were only two reasons for such an unusual sight.
One: a notoriously fearsome individual sat there, well-known to all.
Two: others had tried to approach before and had learned their lesson the hard way. Now, no one dared to intrude.
Paul’s earlier outburst had caught the attention of a few figures in that corner, their gazes now focused on them. Fang Bo could sense it clearly.
“Boss,” Fang Bo knocked on the table and quietly slipped a large bill to the tavern owner. “Tell me about that group over there.”
The owner of The Sea’s Bubble liked to be called “First Mate.” Though Fang Bo didn’t address him as such, the money softened any offense.
As for giving away information? The owner was principled. He wouldn’t sell out his customers.
Seeing the owner shake his head in silence, Fang Bo thought for a moment before taking out ten times the original amount and placing it on the table.
“They’re from the Alvida Pirates,” the owner finally said, pocketing the money. He added some helpful context: “Half an hour ago, a group of pirates wanted the ladies to join them for drinks.”
“And the result?”
“If you go outside now, you might still see their bodies floating in the gutter.”
Smiling, the owner placed a bottle of his homemade liquor—called “Sea’s Flame”—on the table. Its unique taste had won over many a drinker.
“Care to try a glass?”
Fang Bo couldn’t help but feel slightly uncomfortable with the owner’s sudden warmth. He preferred his original prideful demeanor.
As for the information, it confirmed Fang Bo’s suspicion: these women were far from ordinary.
The Alvida Pirates, led by the first villain Luffy encountered after setting sail. Alvida herself believed she was the most beautiful woman on the seas, though in reality, she was a freckled, overweight, unattractive woman.
Alvida had a bounty of five million, about the same as Fang Bo’s current status—hardly impressive in terms of power.
Later, she ate a Devil Fruit, transforming into a beautiful, slender woman with enhanced strength and a more seductive personality.
“Maybe we could take this opportunity to bring the Alvida Pirates under our wing.”
As Fang Bo considered this, a beautiful woman suddenly walked toward him from that corner.
The pirates around her made way as if they were proper gentlemen, allowing her to pass freely. It was clear that this was the one responsible for earlier events.
As the woman sat down, Fang Bo carefully studied her, sensing something strange about her aura. When she finally spoke, his suspicions were confirmed.
“Didn’t expect to meet another reincarnator just by coming in for a drink,” Fang Bo said with a knowing smile.
“Indeed,” the woman extended her hand, her gaze calm. “My name is Ryuno. Pleased to meet you, Mr. Jason, the Brutal with the highest bounty in the world.”
“. . . Your information is very up-to-date.”
“The NESTS Squad made no effort to hide their defeat.”
Fang Bo thought to himself, ‘Of course it was them. Even after losing, they still managed to spread the word.’
Now everyone knew about Jason the Brutal, making it harder for him to fly under the radar.
“It was just luck,” Fang Bo replied, shaking his head without any hint of pride.
Sensing his reluctance to talk further, Ryuno didn’t press. They weren’t close, so it was best to keep some distance.
She downed a glass of “Sea’s Flame” in one gulp, then nonchalantly asked, “After the fight with the NESTS Squad, the Black Cat Pirates must have suffered significant losses. I imagine you’re looking to recruit new blood.”
Ordering another drink, Fang Bo smiled and gestured for her to continue.
“I know of a big score, one that could earn you enough money to recruit a whole crew of pirates.”
Fang Bo had a hunch about what she meant. “I need a specific number.”
“More than seven hundred million.”
Ryuno expected Fang Bo to react—perhaps question her or express skepticism. After all, who would trust a stranger so easily?
But Fang Bo didn’t react that way. He simply stared at her in silence.
After a long pause, he finally spoke, “Let me see your strength.”
If she was asking him to cooperate, it meant she couldn’t handle it on her own and was banking on his defeat of the NESTS Squad.
By gauging her strength, he could estimate the power of the enemy they were up against.
“Fine. Let’s head to the back of the tavern.”
Soon, they were in the back alley, with the rest of the Alvida Pirates following close behind, clearly not comfortable with Ryuno facing the Black Cat Pirates alone.
Inside the tavern, the onlookers quickly realized a fight was about to break out. Even the owner pulled up a chair, eager to watch the show.
When they heard it was the Black Cat Pirates and their leader, the infamous Jason the Brutal, the few who had spoken ill of them sobered up real fast.
“Boss, let me handle this,” Paul said eagerly, stepping forward.
With his sword in hand, Paul’s strength was second only to Butchi and Sam. He was undoubtedly one of the Black Cat Pirates’ core fighters.
In a one-on-one fight, Paul could take on most reincarnators in this world, barring exceptional circumstances.
Unlike his loyal subordinate, Ryuno remained shrouded in mystery. Fang Bo didn’t want to be rude by scanning her stats outright.
“Once they fight, her abilities will be revealed.”
“You may begin,” Fang Bo said, his tone calm. “But remember—stop when I say.”
In front of the eager crowd, Paul drew his demonic sword and charged at Ryuno.
A faint purple glow surrounded the blade, clearly marking it as no ordinary weapon.
Facing Paul’s fierce attack, Ryuno calmly extended her finger and began drawing a glowing hexagram in the air.
In the blink of an eye, a blue talisman appeared from nowhere.
“A Taoist?” Fang Bo thought, surprised. But soon, he realized there was more to it.
*Spirit Binding!*
The talisman transformed into tangible chains, solidly binding Paul in place.
Ignoring his desperate struggles, Ryuno summoned another talisman, but this time, she threw it at her feet.
*Shikigami Summon: Akashita!*
As a four-eyed demon with a red tongue appeared, Fang Bo finally understood Ryuno’s true identity.
She wasn’t a Taoist; she was an Onmyoji.
Ryuno the Onmyoji—a name any veteran reincarnator would know as belonging to a rising star.
Akashita stared with its glowing red eyes and summoned a thunderstorm by beating its drum.
Paul, trapped by Spirit Binding, could only watch as lightning bolts rained down from the sky.
Luckily, Ryuno held back, so Paul was left scorched but still alive.
“Boss, I lost,” Paul said, dejected.
“Don’t worry about it.” Fang Bo patted his shoulder and had the tavern owner prepare a room for Paul to clean up.
Once that was settled, Fang Bo turned to Ryuno, sizing her up.
“Do you have more Shikigami?” he asked, curious.
“I do.”
“Do they take up skill slots?”
“Of course.”
This was the first time Fang Bo had met another summoner, and he had plenty of questions.
As for whether they’d work together? That remained to be seen.
