Chapter 58: The Battle with Jorogumo

“Follow me,” said Ubume.

Using her natural demonic senses, Ubume led the way through the winding passages, always finding the correct path.

No matter how much she resembled a human, her demonic essence couldn’t be changed. At her core, she was just like Jorogumo—a creature that the heavens and earth would never accept.

Fortunately, she had met a remarkable Onmyoji, and Ubume was more than willing to fight alongside her.

“Ryu, meeting you has been one of the happiest moments of my life,” Ubume murmured suddenly, her voice filled with emotion.

She intended to express her gratitude, but noticed that both Onmyoji had strange expressions on their faces.

“Uh, with the battle ahead, let’s save this conversation for later,” Ryuno wiped the sweat from her brow, stopping Ubume from jinxing their mission with sentimental words.

Any more talk like that, and it felt like something bad was bound to happen with the current mood.

“Let’s keep moving,” Fang Bo said. Whether it was an illusion or not, ever since in the Onmyoji world, he felt like Ryuno’s shikigami had become much more animated.

It was as if a puppet had been truly brought to life.

Back in the Pirate world, Ubume had rarely spoken, and when she did, it was always about the mission or combat, hardly ever showing any emotional expression.

Fang Bo silently speculated that perhaps this change was due to some mysterious restriction tied to the space, or maybe there was a hidden limitation behind the shikigami summoning.

His questions could probably only be answered by a veteran summoner.

Just as entering other worlds blurred a reincarnator’s identity and appearance, summoned shikigami also experienced this blurring effect.

To Ubume, the two people beside her were both Onmyoji, and she believed that she had always been fighting in this world, unaware of the disconnect caused by her summoning from another dimension. If one day the reincarnator broke the contract, she would revert to her original nature as a demon.

This was one of the mechanisms designed to protect the reincarnation space. If too many native inhabitants became aware of the existence of “space,” it could cause unnecessary trouble.

Powerful and highly intelligent characters from plot worlds might find ways to enter the space, which would throw the course of fate into complete chaos.

Fang Bo, still inexperienced, didn’t yet grasp the full scope of this problem. He was more concerned about how he would handle Jorogumo once he captured her.

Recalling her beautiful upper body, a bold thought suddenly crossed his mind.

“We’re almost there,” Ubume’s voice broke his train of thought.

The group continued slowly through the tunnel until they reached a massive cavern filled with webs. There, they saw a demon over two meters tall resting on the web with her eyes closed.

This beautiful creature was Jorogumo, their main target. From her appearance alone, it wasn’t surprising that men would go mad over her.

As Fang Bo gazed at her striking features, his thoughts grew even more intense.

“The lower half is out of the question, but the upper half should be fine… I wonder if she’d be willing.”

Once he had her under control, he’d definitely have to test his theory, or he’d never be able to shake the itch in his mind.

The two reincarnators exchanged a glance, and Fang Bo lowered himself to the ground, inching toward the giant spider.

At this point, all he could do was hope his senses were sharp enough to surpass the demon’s. Otherwise, things might take a violent turn.

It took Fang Bo over ten minutes of creeping across the short distance to finally reach the top of the rock wall.

A slow approach wasn’t going to work—his best shot was to leap from above and strike her directly.

As he prepared to make his move, a sudden chill ran down his spine.

Looking down, he saw that, at some point, a strand of spider silk had wrapped around his ankle.

Even though he reacted quickly, trying to activate his gear, the strength gap between them was too large, and Fang Bo was yanked down toward Jorogumo by the web.

Landing on the soft silk, he wasn’t injured, but seeing those eight sharp green legs towering over him filled him with a suffocating sense of dread.

Worst of all, during his fall, he had become completely entangled in the sticky web.

Forget standing up to fight—he couldn’t even move his hand to touch her as she loomed over him.

Fortunately, Jorogumo didn’t kill him immediately. She seemed more curious about why a man had appeared in her lair.

“How brave you are, little Onmyoji,” Jorogumo said with a sultry smile, her voice carrying the seductive charm of a mature woman.

If it weren’t for the pile of bones on the ground, you might have thought she was a kind demon.

Staring up at her monstrous spider body, Fang Bo suddenly asked, “Do you brush your spider head’s teeth?”

“Huh?”

*Degrade!*

As 3 points of mental energy were consumed, the web binding him suddenly ignited, turning to ash in an instant.

Before Jorogumo could react, Fang Bo reached out and touched one of her sleek black legs.

[Deterioration skill successfully triggered. Target is afflicted with the “tendon rupture” effect. Movement speed reduced by 80% for 10 seconds.]

“Attack!”

As soon as he gave the order, a talisman flew through the air and smacked Jorogumo in the face.

In the next moment, Ubume appeared, and her parasol-sword slashed through Jorogumo’s body, leaving several gashes.

“You bastard!” The wounded spider demon screeched, her voice sharp and shrill, as the sound of countless tiny legs skittering toward them filled the cavern.

In no more than ten seconds, a swarm of spiders would overwhelm them. If they wanted to win, they had to get her health below 20% before then.

“Don’t let up!” Ryuno threw another talisman and commanded Akashita to beat his drum, summoning a storm of lightning.

Even so, Jorogumo stubbornly launched a counterattack.

Raising her legs to support her body, she spoke in a voice tinged with hysteria, “I’ll make sure none of you leave this place alive!”

Demonic energy surged, and dozens of smaller spider demons quickly formed and hurled themselves at each member of the party.

*Heart-Biting Soul-Eating!*

Ryuno felt a sharp pain in her chest as her body was overwhelmed by a wave of dizziness.

[You have been attacked by the Heart-Biting Soul-Eating skill, receiving 32 points of damage from the bite.]

[Skill effect activated. You are stunned for 5 seconds.]

“Damn it.” She couldn’t move her body, but her mind was still clear.

Because of this, she felt a deep sense of despair.

This was the most critical moment, and 5 seconds was far too long. It might affect the outcome of their Destiny Mission.

Especially Fang Bo, trapped in the web—she couldn’t imagine what he was facing right now.

*Bang!*

Just as her anxiety reached its peak, a familiar gunshot rang out.

Even though she couldn’t see, Ryuno instantly recognized the sound of Fang Bo’s Dragoon pistol.

“He’s okay!”

Indeed, Fang Bo was fine. Thanks to his high mental resistance, he had been immune to the stun effect of Heart-Biting Soul-Eating.

Taking advantage of the momentary stiffness in Jorogumo’s body, he pulled out his flintlock pistol and activated his Ammo Master skill, firing a piercing shot right into her.

And that wasn’t the end. In the dim cavern, a flash of golden light appeared—the three giant brothers had arrived.

The trio latched onto Jorogumo’s legs, gnawing away like crazed creatures, a scene so bizarre it was hard to tell who was the real monster.

By now, Fang Bo had recognized Jorogumo’s weakness—close combat wasn’t her strength.

Despite the sharp venomous blades on her legs, she couldn’t wield them effectively. Faced with the giants holding onto her, she was left frantically spraying webs in all directions, helpless without her signature moves.

“Her damage output is mediocre; it’s her control skills that are the real threat,” Fang Bo muttered as he placed his hand on the giant spider’s head, his eyes flashing with determination.

*Degrade!*

[Deterioration skill successfully triggered. Target is afflicted with the “burn” effect, dealing 5 points of fire damage per second for 10 seconds.]

Engulfed in flames alongside the three giants, they were a terrifying sight as they continued their relentless assault on Jorogumo.

This was the power of his upgraded skills. When used in conjunction with his summoned creatures, they could continuously keep enemies trapped in debilitating status effects.

With the damage from Ubume and Ryuno, Jorogumo’s health was now critically low. Fang Bo was worried that one more shot might accidentally finish her off.

As soon as his gun reloaded, he deliberately aimed at a less vital spot before firing.

No critical hit, no massive damage, but it was enough. He could now use the contract scroll.

“No!” Sensing what was happening, Jorogumo began thrashing wildly, summoning her smaller spiders again.

If she managed to unleash her ultimate skill

, the entire team would be wiped out. But just before she could, Fang Bo successfully tore open the contract talisman.

[You are using the Blood Oath Contract Talisman. Target: SR-ranked demon Jorogumo.]

[Contract being formed. Please wait.]

As the demon finally fell still, Fang Bo let out a long sigh of relief, and Ryuno regained her senses from the stun.

Looking at the frozen horde of spiders, she and Ubume rushed over to Fang Bo’s side, waiting together for the Blood Oath Contract to be completed.

“Thank goodness we succeeded.” She managed a faint smile.

Jorogumo’s close combat abilities were weak, but her mid-range attacks were terrifying.

Had Ryuno remained stunned any longer, Jorogumo’s eight venomous legs would have struck down Fang Bo before he could even regain his footing.

Luckily, that didn’t happen. Today’s battle, though dangerous, had ended without tragedy.

Circling Jorogumo twice, Ryuno clicked her tongue in amazement. “Interesting. She’s completely different from Ubume.”

Fang Bo smiled slightly, about to say something when a flash of light, visible only to him, emerged from Jorogumo’s body.

[You have successfully formed a contract with Jorogumo.]

[You have learned the C-rank skill, Shikigami Summon.]
