Chapter 63: Sorcerer Ali
A faint, almost imperceptible threat constantly hovered around them, yet no trace of the enemy could be found throughout the entire mansion.
Recalling the task’s hint, Fang Bo began searching more deliberately. He finally found a clue near the dried-up well in the courtyard.
Seeing the scattered dirt around the area, the two realized the problem lay below. The spiders had been able to roam freely through the town, likely because an extensive underground passage had been dug for them.
Gazing down into the abyss, Fang Bo was just about to instruct the giants to explore the path when their new teammate impatiently pulled out an oil lamp.
“Hurry up! If we delay any longer, it’ll be too late,” Ali said before jumping in without the slightest concern for any potential traps below.
In truth, given that such tasks were assigned by the space itself, there was little chance that the hostage would be devoured the next second.
As long as they didn’t drag things out too much, there should be ample time to reach their destination. The real challenge was figuring out how to rescue the hostage from the ghost spiders.
This reasoning was simple enough, and one would think it should be obvious, but Ali struggled to maintain even basic composure.
His reckless behavior didn’t seem motivated by the potential for storyline points. Rather, it seemed as though he was genuinely worried about the hostage’s safety.
Although it was a normal sentiment, it felt oddly out of place for a Reincarnator.
“Your sense of justice is a bit too overwhelming,” Fang Bo muttered with a frown, recalling the moment they first met.
Ali had killed an enemy with a flick of a coin. At the time, a chest had indeed appeared from the corpse, but this guy didn’t even bother to collect it in his rush to save someone.
Having a kind heart wasn’t necessarily a bad thing—it was certainly better than the backstabbers—but an overabundance of compassion could be just as troublesome.
“I’ll wait and observe for now.” Hearing Ali’s voice echoing from the well, Fang Bo jumped in after him.
If Ali truly turned out to be the overly naive type, they would simply part ways after the mission. Otherwise, sticking together would be like carrying a ticking time bomb.
Landing on the damp soil, Fang Bo followed Ali through the tunnel, covering his mouth as the stench in the air grew unbearable.
Sure enough, the area beneath the well was far more expansive than expected—this was no mere tunnel; it was a fortress painstakingly built over many years.
“It runs deep in all directions. It seems the creatures from Spider Mountain frequently visit this place.”
Such a large space naturally wouldn’t contain just one ghost spider. Before long, enemies blocked their path.
“Humans?!” The creature’s expression was full of surprise, like a crab jumping into boiling water at a hotpot.
Licking its lips with a claw, the ghost spider rushed toward them, eyes gleaming with excitement.
“I’ll take care of this,” Ali said without hesitation, pulling out a kitchen knife and charging forward.
Fang Bo, with his keen senses, could tell the knife was imbued with a special energy, indicating it was far from an ordinary weapon despite its comical appearance.
“You’re the one who should die, monster!” Dodging the first attack with ease, Ali swiftly cut off two of the spider’s legs.
Before the spider could hit the ground, a strange blue energy enveloped its body.
With a whip-like kick, Ali sent the ghost spider crashing into a nearby stone wall, following up with a barrage of physical attacks that caused significant damage.
Without using any special techniques, Ali managed to beat the seemingly formidable spider to death.
Watching the blue aura around Ali’s blade, Fang Bo couldn’t shake the feeling that his teammate’s abilities seemed familiar, as though they were from a power he had encountered before.
Though he hadn’t seen enough yet, a few more instances like this, and Ali’s abilities would no longer be a mystery to him.
Sensing Fang Bo’s inquisitive gaze, Ali hesitated for a moment before voluntarily explaining the source of his power.
“Most of my abilities come from the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. You could think of me as a seasoned jujutsu sorcerer,” Ali said with striking honesty.
Hearing this, Fang Bo suddenly realized that the energy was indeed the manifestation of “cursed energy.”
However, in the Reincarnation Space, skills were typically simulated through mental power. It was the first time Fang Bo had seen someone using actual “cursed energy.”
Ali explained further, “Mental power can simulate any form of energy. With enough practice, you can replicate the unique systems of any storyline world.”
“What’s the benefit of doing that?” Fang Bo asked, curious.
He understood that Ali had simulated cursed energy, and if he wished, he could also simulate chakra, nen, ki, or spiritual energy.
It looked flashy, but Fang Bo wasn’t sure there was any significant difference in practical use.
“I just got used to it,” Ali replied curtly, clearly not wanting to elaborate further.
As a sorcerer, Ali’s attacks naturally had a stronger effect on cursed or malevolent creatures.
In other words, fighting ghost spiders gave him an extra damage bonus.
His knife wasn’t an ordinary weapon either. It was a cursed tool, as evident from the ghost spider’s pained reaction to it—it inflicted extra damage on cursed beings too.
Noticing Ali’s reluctance to continue the conversation, Fang Bo wisely dropped the subject.
It didn’t matter where this temporary teammate came from; what mattered was whether they could continue working together. And from what Fang Bo could see, the chances of that seemed slim.
Turning to listen to the distant sounds, Fang Bo raised his arm, pointing his Dragoon rifle toward the far corner of the cave. “I don’t think we can hide our presence any longer. From here on, I’ll be joining the fight too.”
Just as he finished speaking, a piercing shot struck the ghost spider in the neck.
[Your armor-piercing shot has dealt 24+36 critical damage to the target.]
With Ali by his side, Fang Bo could now fire without hesitation, no longer needing to worry about reloading in the heat of battle.
Though the neck shot inflicted bonus damage, the Dragoon rifle wasn’t powerful enough to kill the spider with a single hit.
The Dragoon wasn’t a high-output weapon but one that added various status effects, making it most effective when used in combination with other abilities.
At that moment, Ali cleaved the neck of the struggling spider with his knife, finishing it off before it could fully recover.
While their personalities might differ, their teamwork had proven to be quite seamless. Especially Ali, as the close-combat fighter, who demonstrated excellent awareness by making room for Fang Bo’s attacks when necessary.
Such combat instincts weren’t innate but honed through extensive experience. Fang Bo was convinced that Ali must have spent a long time in Reincarnator teams.
As for why he was now acting alone, that wasn’t Fang Bo’s concern.
“Maybe his bleeding-heart compassion got him kicked out,” Fang Bo thought maliciously.
The fact that he had the luxury to speculate suggested their situation wasn’t too dire. He couldn’t deny Ali’s rich combat experience; the man handled every unexpected situation with calm precision.
Under Ali’s impressive performance, their progress went smoothly, and they soon arrived at a massive underground cave.
The unfortunate Demon Slayer Corps member had already been wrapped up in spider silk, dangling from the ceiling as he struggled in vain.
“Don’t worry, I’m here to save you,” Ali said, gripping his knife as he began searching for a route to rescue the hostage.
Saving the person would be easy enough—Fang Bo’s sharpshooting could easily sever the silk threads—but with so many spiders crawling below, they wouldn’t get far without dealing with them first.
“I’m sorry,” Ali suddenly muttered, “I’m not very good at handling groups. Do you have any ideas?”
Not good at group combat, and yet you still charged in like that?
Before Fang Bo could respond, things took a turn for the worse.
[You’ve been affected by poison, losing 1 health point every 3 seconds.]
Upon entering the cave, Fang Bo had noticed a pungent, noxious odor in the air.
At first, he thought it was just the smell of rotting bodies, but now it seemed the air was laced with some sort of toxin.
This meant that even if they did nothing, their health would drop by 20 points per minute.
“Damn it,” Fang Bo cursed. There was no way he could afford to hold back any longer.
With a thought, a summoning circle appeared at his feet. In truth, he was curious to see how his shikigami would fare in real combat.
Shikigami Summoning: Jorogumo!
To Ali’s astonishment, an even larger spider yokai materialized.
“You’re a summoner too?!” Ali exclaimed.
Ignoring Ali’s surprise, Fang Bo commanded his shikigami to unleash its most powerful attack.
As terrifying mental energy gathered, seven smaller energy-formed spiders launched toward the enemy in a frenzy.
Soul-Devouring Venom!
[Jorogumo’s Soul-Devouring Venom hit its target, dealing 38 points of corrosive damage.]
[Skill effect activated, target stunned for 5 seconds.]
The seven ghost spiders were all frozen in place without exception. Seizing the moment, the large spider head under Jorogumo opened its mouth and released several strands of highly durable spider silk.
“Now!” Fang Bo wasted no time pulling the trigger, shooting at one of the ghost spiders.
Reacting quickly, Ali dashed toward another spider with his knife, tossing two coins along the way to finish off the one his companion had weakened.
By the time the enemies regained their senses and began tearing at the webbing, only five ghost spiders remained.
“Damn it, what kind of monster are you?!” The ghost spiders couldn’t comprehend the presence of Jorogumo.
Seeing their opponent stay silent, the battle-hardened spiders combined their efforts, pulling the larger spider down with their collective strength, exploiting Jorogumo’s lack of physical power.
However, this was precisely what Fang Bo had intended.
Under his command, the fallen Jorogumo ignored the bites of the other spiders and lifted its leg blades, launching into a frenzied attack.
The toxin, which inhibited cellular growth, swiftly entered the bodies of the ghost spiders.
