Chapter 39: Heading to the Baratie
“You’re still not offering enough,” Ryuno said, gently caressing the *Dragoon* flintlock in her hands. “If I put this up in the Space Plaza, those gunners would bid the price sky-high.”
In fact, Fang Bo was far from being a true gunner. He merely had a few long-range attack options, but dedicated gunners had numerous skills at their disposal, enhancing their damage, accuracy, and inflicting debuffs. In the hands of a skilled gunner, the *Dragoon* would be even more devastating.
Fang Bo sighed internally, realizing that he would need to offer more storyline points to seal the deal. He couldn’t deny that Ryuno was an expert negotiator—he was beginning to see that his original offer had indeed been too low.
Just when he thought he might have to part with more points, Ryuno suddenly shifted the conversation. “I don’t need any more storyline points. There’s just one thing I want from you.”
Her tone was almost seductive, reminiscent of a boss trying to tempt a naive intern. Fang Bo immediately became wary. But Ryuno wasn’t implying anything romantic. Instead, she wanted him to help her complete her *shikigami* (spirit) mission involving the **Ubume**.
The Ubume, a bird demon filled with hatred, kept a group of humans captive in its lair—most of them were infants. It cared for them well, feeding and tending to their needs, but when the male infants grew older, they were subjected to cruel hunting rituals. The Ubume, who adored children, decided it wanted to save these babies’ futures.
If Fang Bo could help it fulfill this desire, the Ubume would transform into one of Ryuno’s permanent followers, no longer a mere summoned spirit but a reincarnator recognized by the system.
As a follower, it would be bound by contract and could never betray its master. However, it would still have to endure countless hardships—a price it would have to pay to defy its destiny.
“I want you to help my *Ubume* be reborn and escape its predetermined fate,” Ryuno said earnestly.
From everything Fang Bo had seen, Ryuno was different from most reincarnators. She didn’t view storyline characters as mere NPCs. She genuinely cared about her companions, and her desire to save them was only natural. The problem was that Ryuno couldn’t tackle the demon’s lair alone.
Using her resources, she could bring one person with her. Though Fang Bo wasn’t the strongest candidate, he was the most suitable at the moment.
With this as her condition, Fang Bo could acquire the *Dragoon* in exchange for agreeing to help. Of course, they would have to formalize the agreement with a contract to ensure both parties honored their commitments.
“Alright,” Fang Bo said after a moment’s hesitation. “When this world ends, I’ll help you complete the *shikigami*’s mission.”
As soon as the words left his mouth, he received a system prompt.
**[Number 14005 has sent you a contract.]**
Fang Bo read through the contract carefully before signing his name. After completing the trade, he finally held the silver flintlock in his hands. As he admired its craftsmanship, a new thought began to form in his mind.
Based on Ryuno’s description of the mission, Fang Bo had a good idea of what kind of demon they would be facing. If he joined her, was there a chance he could claim the spirit for himself? After all, the mission was to save the infants, not necessarily to kill the demon. There might be some wiggle room for negotiation.

After reviewing his current stats, Fang Bo decided to keep his new plan to himself. Ryuno was focused on fulfilling her *shikigami*’s mission, and if he complicated things, it could easily upset her.
Watching the pirates haul gold onto the ship, Fang Bo suddenly felt exhausted. He retreated to the *Black Cat* ship and immediately fell into a deep sleep.
When he woke up the next day, it was already noon. He was jolted awake by a sudden system notification.
**[Number 14552, Number 14005: Hidden Chain Quest Triggered—Baroque Works Pursuit!]**
He jumped out of bed, taking a few seconds to process the situation.
“So, this is the pursuit Ryuno was talking about.”
[Chain Hidden Quest: Baroque Works Pursuit.]
[Quest Description: You have killed a key operative of Baroque Works. The mastermind behind the organization is furious and has issued a kill order. No matter where you go, they will hunt you down.]
[First Task: Evade the Company’s Pursuers.]
[Special Note: You can complete this quest over multiple trips into the same storyline world.]
In other words, there was no rush to complete the quest during this world. He could always wait until he returned to the *One Piece* universe later. Since it was a chain quest, the initial pursuit was just the beginning. At some point, he would likely have to confront the head of Baroque Works, one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea.
When Fang Bo stepped out of his cabin, he saw Ryuno’s face beaming with excitement.
“Amazing! We triggered a chain hidden quest!” she exclaimed, looking like she had just won the lottery.
Not entirely sure what the big deal was, Fang Bo asked her to explain.
“Hidden quests are rare to begin with,” Ryuno said. “They usually only happen around major storyline characters.”
“Oh.”
“And chain hidden quests are even rarer. The rewards for completing them are usually incredible!”
“I see.”
Ryuno was visibly annoyed by his calm reaction. She had expected some shared excitement, but instead, she felt like her enthusiasm was falling on deaf ears.
“This guy is definitely single in real life,” she thought bitterly. But she had more important things to focus on—namely, convincing the two pirate crews to merge into one.
With the threat of Baroque Works looming, persuading Captain Alvida to join the Black Cats was much easier. Alvida knew she couldn’t stand a chance against Baroque Works on her own.
After Fang Bo counted their loot, he received confirmation that the two pirate crews had merged. In addition to bolstering their numbers, the Black Cat Pirates gained three elite officers and a powerful onmyoji.
But Fang Bo knew it wasn’t enough. The Krieg Pirates, with their 50-ship fleet, were no joke. To defeat them, they needed to expand their ranks further.
“This one’s on you,” Fang Bo said, delegating the task of recruiting more pirates to Ryuno.
He had other matters to attend to, so he entrusted her with the recruitment effort. She was to flaunt their 700 million Beli haul to attract greedy pirates, but keep their ultimate target—the Krieg Pirates—a secret until the last moment.
That way, when the time came to fight, the mercenary pirates would have no choice but to commit fully, as retreat would no longer be an option.
“Contact a shipyard,” Fang Bo added. “Whatever it takes, get enough ships to form a proper fleet.”
Once that was done, it would be time to take down the Krieg Pirates.
“Got it,” Ryuno said, not pressing for details. She knew everyone had their secrets. As long as it didn’t interfere with the mission, what Fang Bo did in his free time was his business.
They agreed on a time and place to meet. Fang Bo, as vice-captain, used his “forced suggestion” ability to designate their next target for raiding. Though some were confused by the decision, they trusted his judgment. After all, under his guidance, the Black Cat Pirates had only grown stronger, especially after absorbing Alvida’s crew.
With new ships and recruits on the way, they were well on their way to dominating the East Blue.
—
**Baratie**, a floating restaurant in the East Blue, was famous for its gourmet food. Even high-ranking Marines were known to dine there for its exquisite cuisine.
The restaurant was founded by Zeff, a former pirate. After his crew suffered a shipwreck while attacking a passenger vessel, Zeff and a young apprentice chef survived 85 days stranded on a deserted island.
This experience left Zeff with a deep understanding of hunger’s pain. After being rescued, he sold all his treasures and opened Baratie with the apprentice.
Though he lost much of his former strength, Zeff’s culinary skills had only grown more impressive, and Baratie became the most renowned restaurant in the East Blue.
In the corner of Baratie’s bustling dining hall, two men sat enjoying their meal. They seemed ordinary, blending in with the other patrons, but the tattoos on their wrists gave away their true identities—they were reincarnators, just like Fang Bo.
Gently tapping his glass, Vincenzo smirked. “Looks like our plan’s working perfectly, boss.”
“Maybe,” Jushan replied, setting down his drink and eyeing the busy chefs. “I held back during our encounter, but that doesn’t mean they’ll give it their all.”
Jushan’s gaze settled on a blond-haired young man. “Once we’re done eating, let’s go introduce ourselves. Hopefully, the intel we got wasn’t a lie.”
But before they could finish their conversation, the two men suddenly froze, their eyes snapping to the entrance.
The restaurant doors flew open with a crash, and in strode the black-caped *Brutal* Jason.
