- MWM Chapter 340
“What’s going on? Why are you all looking at Quill?”
Rocket noticed that when Leo mentioned this, Wanda, Gamora, and Nebula all turned to look at Star-Lord.
“Because I’m the one Yondu took from Earth twenty-three years ago, and if I remember correctly, he only took me.
And when I was a kid, I never met my father,” Star-Lord said, frowning. “But why didn’t Yondu take me to Ego?”
“Because Yondu realized that all the children he had delivered to Ego were killed, so he kept your existence a secret and raised you on his ship,” Leo explained.
“Okay, I always thought he grabbed me because he needed a small kid to help him steal stuff.”
As Star-Lord recalled his life with Yondu over the past twenty years, a look of understanding appeared in his eyes, but then he frowned again.
“I can’t believe that the perfect man my mother always spoke about, my biological father, turns out to be a planet. And he never even loved my mother—it was all just to gain power.
I really feel bad for my mom; she loved him so much!”
“You’re wrong about that. When Ego was with your mother, he did fall in love with her. At one point, he even considered abandoning his original goal to stay on Earth and live with her.
But eventually, he chose his mission. To stop himself from being swayed by her, he planted a tumor in her brain, causing her to die,” Leo revealed the harsh truth.
“Quill, your father is a real piece of work… Oh, wait, he’s not even human,” Rocket said angrily.
Upon hearing that Ego had killed his mother, Star-Lord nearly exploded with rage.
“He killed my mom? I swear I’ll kill him with my own hands!”
Seeing Star-Lord’s reaction, Gamora stood up, patted him on the shoulder to comfort him, and then turned to Leo and asked:
“According to what you’re saying, Ego must be incredibly powerful. Can you defeat him?”
“Honestly, with my current strength, I can’t beat Ego—not even with Wanda’s help,” Leo said, shaking his head.
Although his power was formidable and Wanda might be even stronger when fully unleashed, neither of them had reached the level of a Skyfather, like Odin or the Ancient One.
Ego, being a planet that had lived for millions of years, was not an official member of the Celestials, but a flawed creation. Even so, his power was on par with Odin or the Ancient One.
With just a small avatar, he could easily destroy an entire fleet of the technologically advanced Sovereign Empire. His full planetary form was unimaginably powerful.
However, Leo knew that, unlike the true Celestials, Ego had a fatal weakness—his brain, hidden deep within the planet, was extremely vulnerable. A sufficiently powerful bomb could destroy it, and if they could locate Ego’s brain, they could kill him.
“If even you can’t beat him, what’s the point of us going?!”
Hearing that Leo and Wanda together couldn’t defeat Ego, everyone was instantly dumbfounded.
They had witnessed Leo’s terrifying power firsthand—he had withstood the full force of the Dark Aster’s main cannon without a scratch and had single-handedly wiped out Ronan’s entire fleet.
If someone that powerful couldn’t take on Ego, what chance did a bunch of “small fries” like them have? Wasn’t this a death sentence?
Leo, however, remained calm.
“That’s where your acting skills come in. If you can act convincingly, we’ll be able to kill Ego and save the galaxy with ease.”
“Acting skills?”
Gamora and the others were completely baffled by this response.
What did acting have to do with killing Ego? How could good acting make defeating Ego easier? It seemed like these two things were completely unrelated.
“Yes, acting. Because Quill is the only child who inherited Ego’s Celestial power. When we arrive on Ego’s planet, he will undoubtedly awaken Quill’s power and invite him to join his plan to assimilate the galaxy.
All you have to do is play along and buy us time. Meanwhile, we’ll locate the only other surviving child of Ego—your half-sister, Mantis.
She knows Ego’s weakness and has the ability to make him fall asleep temporarily.
With your Celestial power, Mantis’s ability to hypnotize, and all of us working together, we’ll be able to take down Ego and save the galaxy.
So, the most important thing will be your acting—you have to make sure Ego doesn’t realize our true intentions,” Leo explained, looking directly at Star-Lord as he laid out the entire plan.
In the original timeline, Ego was ultimately killed by Star-Lord and Mantis. Without their abilities, little Groot wouldn’t have been able to plant the bomb that destroyed Ego’s brain.
Although they were now a few years ahead of schedule and potential butterfly effects could occur, with Leo and Wanda teaming up alongside Star-Lord and Mantis, the plan seemed solid.
And if things really went south, they could always escape.
While Leo and Wanda couldn’t defeat Ego head-on, they could still escape with Star-Lord and the others. Ego’s planet wouldn’t be able to catch them, and if Ego sent an avatar, they could easily destroy it.
“Alright, let’s do it. I’m going to make sure this guy pays for my mother’s death!” Star-Lord immediately agreed to the plan.
Gamora and Nebula had no objections, and Rocket and Groot were on board as well. Rocket still needed Leo’s help to get revenge on the High Evolutionary, so he was eager to contribute.
“A new side quest has been issued. Please check the mission log for details.”
Just as everyone agreed to Leo’s plan, a notification for a side quest echoed in his ears.
Opening the panel, he quickly scanned the side quest section.
“Side quest: Defeat Ego and stop his plan to assimilate the galaxy’s planets. Reward: Three years of time in a small world.”
“Three years? This might be the biggest reward yet.”
Seeing the generous reward, Leo couldn’t help but feel delighted.
The reason he hadn’t simply gone to Ego’s planet alone and used his space magic to rescue Mantis was that he wanted to trigger a side quest and gain the reward—a win-win situation.
By now, he had started to figure out some of the patterns behind how the quests were triggered.
“Oh, and by the way, don’t tell Drax about this plan when he wakes up. With his personality, he won’t be able to keep a secret, and Ego will figure out what we’re up to.”
As the meeting came to an end, Leo gave a final warning to the group.
Given Drax’s straightforward nature, expecting him to follow the plan and not give anything away was unrealistic.
Star-Lord wasn’t the most reliable either, but excluding him from the plan would make things more complicated.
