RWWOKS Chapter 28

This entry is part 29 of 247 in the series The Reincarnation World Where Only I Know the Storyline

**Chapter 28: The Black Cat Pirates’ Third-in-Command**

Why are pure gunmen often looked down upon by most teams? The reason is simple: while they excel at killing enemies quickly, they also die just as fast.

The journey through the world of these storylines is perilous, to say the least. If you want to become truly powerful, the first thing you must figure out is how to stay alive.

Training a qualified teammate requires a significant amount of resources, and if there’s no guarantee they’ll survive long enough to be useful, then they’re worthless.

[You have killed Reincarnator No. 12047 and received a personal exclusive kill chest.]

[This world is a faction-based confrontation mode. Killing an enemy faction reincarnator grants merit points as a reward.]

The prompt from the space system made Fang Bo’s eyes light up. He hadn’t expected that killing a reincarnator would also reward merit points.

Unfortunately, the two individuals in front of him were part of the pirate faction. If only they had been from the navy side, it would have been perfect.

The sight of his companion being effortlessly killed nearly made Old Cat’s eyes pop out in shock. He had never expected Jason to be someone following the summoner’s path.

The reason they had taken the risk to strike was that they noticed their target had entered the ship’s cabin.

In the tight space, it would negate the effects of the 3D maneuver gear, and with Old Cat’s planned ambush, they should have been able to easily take him down.

That’s how things should have gone, but who could’ve imagined their target had hidden a summoning skill?

The space they thought gave them the advantage turned into a death trap. The gunman had nowhere to hide and was instantly gunned down. Now it was Old Cat’s turn to face the enemy alone.

“Truly a troublesome guy.” Raising his mechanical arm, flames began to rapidly condense in his palm.

Since there was no escape, Old Cat decided to actively release the mechanical thermal energy. Better for everyone to get hurt than for him to take all the damage alone.

Just as he was about to unleash his attack, a sudden, intense pain hit his head, as if he had been struck by a sledgehammer.

[You have been hit by a mental shock from Reincarnator No. 14552, taking 14 points of mental damage.]

Despite Old Cat’s high mental resistance, he still took 14 points of damage, meaning the enemy had at least invested 8 points of mental energy.

“Damn it, I’ve completely misjudged him.”

Before he could activate his mechanical arm’s attack, the giant-headed summon clamped down on his arm with its jaws.

Even as the heat caused its eyes to melt, Number One refused to let go.

Boom!

The mechanical thermal energy finally exploded. Fang Bo, as the opponent, remained unharmed, while Old Cat and the summon took the full force of the blast.

Critically injured and near death, Old Cat instinctively tried to take a healing item, but before he could act, familiar gunshots rang out from the fog.

Thanks to his incredible perception, Fang Bo could lock onto his target even with limited visibility. After a few shots, poor Old Cat collapsed, paralyzed on the ground.

He couldn’t even heal himself—if left untreated, he would bleed out and die within a minute.

“Cough, cough.” Old Cat spat up blood as his consciousness began to fade from the severe injuries.

His lips quivered as if he wanted to say something, but Fang Bo had long grown tired of his fake pleasantries.

“Next time, keep your eyes open.”

Bang!

One shot sent Old Cat straight to hell.

[You have killed Reincarnator No. 11286 and received a personal exclusive kill chest.]

Ignoring the flames raging around him, Fang Bo stood among the wreckage of the cabin and decided to open the gunman’s kill chest.

It was his first time killing a reincarnator, so he had no idea what kind of loot might drop.

“It should be personal items, like story points and equipment.”

[You are opening the kill chest of Reincarnator No. 12047.]

[You have received 220 story points.]

[You have received 5 special armor-piercing bullets.]

[You have received a poison bullet recipe.]

It appeared the loot was all related to the gunman’s items. While there was no equipment, the recipe alone was as valuable as any top-tier gear.

The ability to add poison effects to bullets would greatly enhance Fang Bo’s damage output. Since he couldn’t use the mental shock repeatedly, he would have to rely on his bullets for consistent damage.

Any item that could boost his firearm’s power was something he desperately needed at the moment.

“Now it’s your turn, Old Cat. Let’s see if you disappoint me.”

That mechanical arm had to be a great piece of equipment, and the data-scanning goggles looked promising too. Just one decent drop would make it worth his while.

[You are opening the kill chest of Reincarnator No. 11286.]

[You have received 15 story points.]

[You have received a damaged police goggles.]

[You have received a cheese-filled chocolate bar.]

Looking at the notification from the space system, Fang Bo wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry.

“Seems like this guy is just like me—spending all his story points before entering the world.”

A reward of 15 story points was practically nothing. And that chocolate bar? Ridiculous! He had thought it might be a healing item, but it turned out to be just an ordinary chocolate bar.

He casually tossed the chocolate into his mouth, and to be fair, it tasted pretty good.

Finally, there was the best reward—those police goggles he had long been eyeing.

This little device could detect target data, providing some combat assistance. If it could be repaired, it might have even greater potential.

After killing two reincarnators, Fang Bo was now just one point away from fully leveling up his Heart of Steel talent.

His current health bonus had reached an impressive 39 points.

[Health: 35/109 (+39)

Status: Poor

Strength: 7 (+1)

Constitution: 7

Agility: 6 (+1)

Spirit: 17 (+4)

Perception: 13 (+3)]

**Equipment**: Enhanced 3D Maneuver Gear IV, Black Star Type 54, The Homeland That Can’t Be Returned To, Exquisite Ring, Damaged Police Goggles.

A typical reincarnator might need to experience six or seven story worlds to achieve the same stat bonuses he currently had. Even a slightly more talented member would need at least four trips through storylines. Only a truly extraordinary rookie could match his current level.

Looking more closely, Fang Bo’s mental strength was already formidable, and his perception had reached double digits. In fact, he could be considered one of those super rookies himself.

When he returned to the deck, he immediately saw Captain Kuro standing in a pool of blood, with blood dripping from his Cat Claw gloves. Around him lay the corpses of enemy pirates.

“So, he finally made a move,” Fang Bo thought with a hint of regret. It would have been great to witness Kuro’s fighting in person.

Suddenly, Fang Bo felt the urge to use a detection skill on him, but the words of Old Cat’s previous explanation echoed in his mind.

Using detection on story characters could very likely provoke them. It was like spying on someone while they were changing clothes—extremely offensive. If the character had a short temper, they might attack on the spot.

Moreover, using detection required his perception stat, which made it nearly impossible to clearly see the attributes of a storyline boss.

“I still need to find a way to repair it,” Fang Bo thought.

The newcomer guide he had received mentioned that damaged tech equipment could be repaired in story worlds with civilizations of the same level.

One thing to keep in mind, though, was that depending on the focus of each world, the repaired equipment might undergo significant changes.

If he used the technological forces from the pirate world, the repaired goggles would definitely differ greatly from a cyberpunk aesthetic. It was even possible that the data display feature could disappear, given that in this world, evaluating an opponent’s strength often relied on the innate sense granted by Haki.

In the pirate world, you could sense the strength of a target from kilometers away without needing data-scanning devices.

While thinking about how to repair his goggles, Fang Bo walked back toward his ship. He had taken some serious damage in this battle and needed time to recover his health and stamina.

Just then, something unexpected happened—Captain Kuro spoke to him for the first time: “Did you deal with those two traitors?”

Hearing this, Fang Bo’s expression remained calm as he nodded, appearing completely unbothered. In reality, he was on high alert, ready to abandon ship and escape if anything went wrong.

Kuro, true to his cunning nature, had noticed the actions of the two reincarnators and had even deduced their exact intentions based on their timing.

This man was sharp, unlike other story characters that were easy to fool. The main issue was that Fang Bo couldn’t quite figure out what Kuro was thinking.

The situation could be interpreted as punishing traitors, but on the flip side, it could also be seen as murdering crewmates.

If it was the latter, Fang Bo could only hope the ocean wouldn’t drown him during his escape.

Luckily, the worst-case scenario didn’t occur. To the cold-hearted Captain Kuro, dead men held no value.

“Well done. From now on, you’re the Black Cat Pirates’ third-in-command,” Kuro said before vanishing like a ghost.

Being third-in-command on the ship was a position of real power.

In a small crew like the Straw Hat Pirates, this might not mean much, but in a medium to large pirate crew, it was an entirely different matter.

Fang Bo noticed the subtle shift in the crew’s attitude toward him. Their glances now carried a hint of respect, far different from the casual way they had treated him before.

Of course, not everyone felt that way.

Upon hearing that the newcomer had been promoted to third-in-command, Butchi and Sam, the two fighters, exchanged a look of hostility. The way they now eyed Fang Bo was far from friendly.

They had been secretly competing for this position for a long time, only to have it snatched away by a newcomer.

Butchi, who had spoken with Fang Bo a few times, wasn’t as upset, but the other one wasn’t going to take it well.

If Captain Kuro hadn’t just left, Fang Bo was certain that Sam would have come after him right away.

Casually glancing at the two, Fang Bo quickly assumed his new role and began ordering the crew to clean up the battlefield.

Having wiped out a somewhat notorious pirate crew, the Black Cat Pirates’ reputation would soon spread. Once people learned that they weren’t dead, they would likely face the combined onslaught of Krieg and the navy.

With a few days remaining before the main mission’s deadline, Fang Bo decided to complete another achievement task.
